Premier Goes Down to the Wire, Div. One Champions Crowned & Interdivisional Cup Finalists Confirmed

It has been a dramatic last few weeks in the CDSA with Interdivisional Cup semi-final winners being decided on final frame shoot-outs and Division One Champions are crowned with one game-week to spare. The tension is set to continue as the Premier Division title will be determined on the final week of matches.

County Cons, heading into February unbeaten in the league, slipped up for the first time in their title challenge with a loss away to Penarth Road B in Week 12. This would turn out to be the start of Penarth Road B’s fight for top spot as they continued their league winning streak stretching back from Week 7 to present while the leaders County Cons would fall to two further defeats in a row. These results meant the points gap between the two sides would be reduced from nine points at the start of 2014 to nothing at all after Week 16 as both teams had identical records. This week’s penultimate round of matches could determine who has the advantage going into the final week. County Cons could only manage a 3 – 2 win against Mackintosh Sports while Penarth Road B go top by one point with a 4 – 1 win over Trecenydd A. Both teams would be at the Mackintosh Sports Club come Thursday 10th April as they both play away against the Mackintosh teams so one can expect a thrilling atmosphere and undoubtedly plenty of banter before, during and after the matches.

Division One however has been a more straight forward affair as the league’s newcomers Cuesaders of the Llandaff Institute were crowned Champions with one game to spare. With a win/loss record of 13-2 in matches and 54-21 in frames, Mike Kinman’s team led from start to finish. Current runners up are Taffs Well who are seven points behind and hoping to seal 2nd spot with a win in the final week and stretch a winning streak that currently sits at seven. They will be contested by Park Club and Senghenydd at a further 2 and 5 points behind.

Cathays Cons, reigning Interdivisional Cup and Division One Cup Champions have an early finish to their season as they have a BYE in the final week. They were hoping to defend their title in the handicapped team contest when they faced Wellington Rileys in the semi-finals on Thursday 27th March. However their title defence came to an end when they lost the deciding frame. The other semi-final saw Rumney British Legion take on the sole Premier Division side left in the competition, Penarth Road B. After another final frame decider it was Rumney who triumphed as they beat a Premier team for the second round in a row to make it an all Division One final which takes place at the Llandaff Institute on Thursday 17th April. Match starts at 7:30pm and all are welcome to come and watch.

Reminder: All match results for the final week must be submitted via the internet – so the forum, twitter (@cardiffsnooker) or emailing the League Secretary (kwokbenchung@gmail.com).
