Senghenydd win the Plate!

Senghenydd have retained the Handicap Plate after a close win against Canton Libs B at Taff’s Well Ex-Serviceman’s Club.

James Wigmore started well for Canton in the first frame against Mike Boucher to build up a big lead, but the Senghenydd man cleared the colours to pinch the frame by 8 points.

The Caerphilly side seized the initiative in the next frame after a strong performance by captain Carl Dimond (including a 38 break) to beat Tony Chick by 46 points to take a big lead after two frames.

The third frame was the highlight of the night with Canton needing to close a 54 point gap. Declan O’Callaghan immediately showed his class and looked like he was going to register a big win over John-Henry Griffiths, taking a 30 lead early on. The Cardiff Handicap Singles champion was under pressure, but responded with a well-laid snooker that gained him a succession of misses after O’Callaghan took a few attempts to find the angle needed. This appeared to be the turning point in the frame as Griffiths continued to close the gap on the colours with O’Callaghan winning by 9 points, although both sides knew it could have been a much bigger margin.

With 45 points separating the sides with two frames remaining Rory Wigmore continued the Cardiff team’s fightback with a dominant display against Liam Mortimer thanks to some excellent snookers and safety play, but the Senghenydd youngster kept in the frame and potted some good colours to keep the deficit to 28 points, although once again it could have been a bigger margin of victory.

So the final frame started with Dai Sherman defending a 12 point advantage over James Facey, but the Senghenydd man immediately made that a 30 point lead at the beginning of the frame. This lead remained for almost the entire frame with Facey needing snookers on the last red. The Canton potter fought valiantly and gained a few points in fouls, but it wasn’t enough and Sherman finished strongly to clinch the Handicap Plate for Senghenydd.
