Senghenydd have won the Knockout Plate competition after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Rumney British Legion in a closely-fought and tense match at Taff’s Well Ex-Serviceman’s Club.

Rumney had a 15 point start in each frame and it was built on impressively in the first frame by Kyle Patterson who comfortably beat last year’s Cardiff Open champion John-Henry Griffiths to put Rumney 1-0 up.

Senghenydd needed a response and they got one in the next as Mike Boucher quickly took control of his match against Glyn Hayes, and some solid play helped to seal the frame and level things up at one frame each.

The next was the frame of the night and always looked like it was going to be crucial as Dan Bridle was drawn against Andy Magill. The frame ebbed and flowed and was close as they got to the colours, with both players having chances to win to no avail. It finally went to the black with Magill clinching it to give Rumney a potentially decisive 2-1 lead.

Carl Dimond was up next knowing he had to beat Geoff Sheppard to keep his side in the match, and he soon developed an early lead which he kept all the way to win by the colours and take it to a decider.

The final frame was a belter with Dai Sherman quickly wiping out the handicap as he potted some fine balls early on with two good contributions to take the lead. Jason Summerhayes needed to hit back and did so with some clever safety and tactical play drawing fouls to level things up going into the colours. The scores were level on the brown as Sherman sank it to edge ahead and then some good safety play followed as both players kept their nerve until Sherman potted a good blue to just leave the pink to win the match. He went for it in the green pocket and missed it, but it flew off two cushions straight into the middle pocket to give his side the victory and the 2018-19 Plate title.
