The first leg of the cup semi-finals saw home advantage prove decisive as all four sides registered a win, with reigning Malcolm Keenor Trophy champions Fairwater Cons Mack winning 4-1 against Rumney British Legion to take a big advantage into their home leg at the end of the month. Alan Hurley won a close opening frame against Justin Behnan, before Jason Hewett comfortably beat Alan Groves to make it 2-0. Brian Rees then won a closely-fought frame versus Graeme Prance, before the individual highlight of the evening saw Fairwater captain Ronnie Allen register a fine 65 break in defeating Paul Chichester. With a whitewash looking likely, Alex Ellis hit back for Rumney by winning a consolation frame against Khurram Khan to give themselves a chance heading into the second leg.

The other semi-final was a very good encounter between Mackintosh Snooker and Taff’s Well, with the away side taking a 2-0 lead after Rhys Carpenter beat Eassa Din and Rob Hayes defeated Mike Nessbert. The third frame proved crucial as Glyn Jones built a big lead early on, but Nathan Dunne fought back to win a very close frame and reduce the deficit. Billy Connors then beat Ian Purnell to level the match, before Craig Bolton’s win over Kevin Brown completed the comeback for Mackintosh and gives them a lead going into the return leg.

Fairwater Cons Mack have one hand on the Premier League trophy after a 4-1 win against Mackintosh Snooker leaves them needing four points from their remaining two matches to retain their title. Jason Hewett moved to within one win of retaining his Player of the Year crown after an excellent 78 break got his side off to a winning start against Nathan Dunne. The frame of the night saw Carlos Schiazza look like levelling things up after a 39 break saw him establish a big lead over Alan Hurley, but a 37 clearance saw Hurley double Fairwater’s lead in dramatic fashion. Billy Connors pulled one back for Mackintosh after beating Brian Rees on the black, but wins for Khurram Khan over Eassa Din and Ronnie Allen versus Mike Nessbert saw the champions move closer to the title.

The only team that can deny them is Fairwater Cons after a very good 4-1 win against RBL Warriors saw them stay in touch at the top. Steffan Davies won the opening frame against Simon Takata, before breaks of 39 and 38 saw Rob McKenna win a crucial frame versus in-form Nural Khan. Breaks

Nural Khan 36 (RBL Warriors)

Fairwater Cons Mack have one hand on the Premier League title after a 4-1 away win to The Cons extended their lead at the top of the table. Brian Rees got them off to a good start after beating Ryan Bowgen, and Jason Hewett doubled their lead against Dan Wardle thanks to a 33 break. Wins for Alan Hurley against Mike Rathkey and Khurram Khan versus Dave Standage made it 4-0, before Dave Earls won a consolation frame on the black against Ronnie Allen.

Fairwater Cons moved into second place after a 3-2 win at Taff’s Well, with Rob McKenna winning the opener against Ian Purnell. Steve Flanagan doubled their lead with a scrappy win on the black against Rhys Carpenter, before a 31 break helped Jimmy Llewellyn pull one back versus Terry Garland. The win looked almost certain for Fairwater when Shaun O’Connell raced into a 50-point lead early on, but Glyn Jones produced one of the comebacks in recent memory to score 40 unanswered points to take the frame to the colours, and following an in-off on the brown from O’Connell, Jones held his nerve to clear and complete an incredible victory and level the match at 2-2. The decider was somewhat of an anti-climax though as a solid performance from Steffan Davies comfortably beat Rob Hayes to give his side the win.

RBL Warriors kept their chance of a runners-up spot alive as they beat Roath Cons 3-2 with a 36 break from Nural Khan against Rob Reid putting them ahead.

Fairwater Cons Mack v Bye

The semi-finals in the Malcolm Keenor Trophy and CDSA Plate have been decided after a very tense night in all four group matches. Taff’s Well have won Group B after they defeated Fairwater Cons 3-2, with RBL Warriors just falling short of a semi spot after they could only manage a 3-2 win against Roath Cons. Fairwater Cons Mack take the other place in the last four where they face Rumney British Legion who had already won Group A with the only 100% record in the competition.

Both sides went into this match knowing only a win would do and Taff’s Well made a strong start after Rob Hayes won an entertaining opening frame on the colours against Twm Sion Jones. The longest frame of the night saw Ian Purnell edge a close frame against Steffan Davies, with Purnell winning after an excellent blue saw him dislodge the pink from the side cushion and he cleared to make it 2-0. Kevin Brown made a very good start in the next against Rob McKenna to establish a 30-point lead and was still comfortably ahead on the colours, but a superbly-laid snooker on the pink was missed by Brown and McKenna cleared to keep his side in the match. Fairwater were buoyed by that win and Shaun O’Connell made a very good break early on against Rhys Carpenter to move into a sizeable lead, but the former Cardiff Open winner hit back to take the frame to the colours, with O’Connell potting the blue

Alan Hurley and Khurram Khan both won on the colours against Rob Reid and Clive Marsh respectively to make it 3-0 before Ronnie Allen beat Alan Wright in a close frame and a 35 break from Brian Rees completed the whitewash against Lee Cornock.

Last season’s runners-up Fairwater Cons are in joint-second place following a 3-2 victory at home to in-form Caerphilly Cons, although they were behind early on as Dan Bridle maintained his excellent form as he defeated Steffan Davies. Twm Sion Jones levelled the match with a win against Dai Rideout, before Terry Garland beat Mike Pardoe to make it 2-1. Shaun O’Connell’s victory over Ieuan Simms sealed the win, but Ciaran Paul won the final frame against Steve Flanagan to keep Caerphilly in with a chance at the top of Division One.
