Hewett & Rees win Cardiff Open Pairs

Jason Hewett and Brian Rees are the 2021-22 Cardiff Open Pairs champions after they defeated Luke Haines and Ed Topham of Canton Libs 3-0 in the final. The Mackintosh Sports duo have won the competition before with different partners, but were looking to win their first title as a pair after losing the Handicap Pairs final last week.

They started well and comfortably won the first frame with some fluent potting from Rees, before Jason Hewett’s 52 break in the second was enough to see them take a 2-0 lead. The third frame was much closer and was level with six reds left, but a great long pot allowed Hewett to lay a snooker that cost 15 points and from the resulting miss, Rees potted the penultimate red to go 36 ahead with only one red remaining.

Haines and Topham kept in the frame with some good safety play and snooker attempts, but needing two snooker on the colours they gave Hewett the opportunity to finish the frame on the brown and win the match 3-0.
