Caerphilly A made a strong start to the Malcolm Keenor Trophy as the defeated Taff’s Well Warriors 5-0 in the first match of Group A. Allan Morgan won the opening frame against Simon Takata which included a 49 break, and Nural Khan doubled their lead after defeating Jason Veal. Ian Denton’s win over Chris Johnson made it 3-0, whilst a 40 break from Ben Griffiths was enough to beat Andy Holman and Khurram Khan completed the whitewash after his win against Nick Davis. The other match between Canton Libs and Rumney British Legion had to be postponed and will be rearranged at a later date.

In Group B, Fairwater Cons made a good start in their pursuit to win the title they last secured in 2016 as they beat Roath Cons 4-1, with last season’s Player of the Year Jason Hewett making his first appearance of the season for his new side, as he beat Clive Marsh. Dan Bridle made it 2-0 after his win over Andrew Champion and Steve Flanagan made sure of the win in the next frame against Kerri Whiting. Twm Sion Jones’s impressive early-season form continued as a 37 break saw him defeat Rob Reid, but Lee Cornock won a consolation frame for his side after he beat Shaun O’Connell.

The other match in the group saw County Cons win a closely-fought encounter 3-2 against Macky Misfits, although they had to come from behind as Jacob Boyle defeated Ryan Bowgen in a high-scoring frame. Dave Earls levelled the match in the next after he beat Deepak Singh, before Suhayb Din won the closest frame of the night on the black against Steve Wellbeloved to put County 2-1 ahead. Dave Standage secured the win for his side after he won against Graeme Prance, before Satinder Singh comfortably won the final frame to keep his side in touch in the group at this early stage.
