Fairwater Cons edged closer to retaining their Premier League crown this week after they beat Savoy 4-1 and rivals Mackintosh Sports lost ground despite a 3-2 away to Canton Libs. One of the closest title races for years looks like going to the final week as Fairwater now hold a six-point advantage over Mackintosh, but have played a game more.
Fairwater had to dig deep though to beat Savoy in a closely-fought affair, but they got off to a great start with Twm Sion Jones defeating Mark Bennett thanks to a 57 break. Jason Summerhayes then levelled things with a hour-long frame win over Terry Garland after needing and getting two snookers on the pink to win it on the black. Steffan Davies was at his fluent best to easily beat Colin Lane, before victory on the colours for Ben Griffiths against Geoff Sheppard and Shaun O’Connell versus Jeff Lane sealed the 4-1 win.
Mackintosh kept in the race thanks to a tightly-contested 3-2 win over third-placed Canton Libs, with Jason Hewett winning the opener against Rory Wigmore. Ed Topham made it 1-1 with a comfortable win over Clive Marsh, but Khurram Khan restored the Mack’s lead after he defeated Luke Haines. Alan Hurley’s 48 in the next was in vain as Declan O’Callaghan took the match to a decider, before Ronnie Allen won the battle of the captains against James Wigmore to clinch a crucial 3-2 win for his side.
Mackintosh Snooker are Division One champions after Savoy’s defeat, but Cuesaders Z moved into second place after a 3-2 win over Cathays Cons. Graeme Prance beat Mike Rathkey and Rob Richards defeated Martyn Evans to give them a 2-0 lead, before Paul Chichester won on the black against Dave Standage to seal the win. However, wins for Cardiff Handicap finalist Dave Earls over Mike Kinman and Johnny Davies against Dave Reynolds pulled two frames back for the Cathays.
Taff’s Well got back to winning ways with a 4-1 win over Rumney British Legion, but had to come from behind after Justin Behnan’s win over Ian Purnell in the opening frame. Nick Jones then won the next versus thanks to a 40 break against Andy Magill, before Jimmy Llewellyn put Taff’s Well in front with victory over Tony Parkin. Excellent potting from Kevin Brown gave his side the lead after he beat Frank Deriu and Rob Hayes had to overcome a 45-point deficit in the last to beat Glyn Hayes, but it’s unlikely to be enough for Taff’s Well to reach the sides above them after Trecenydd Snooker won 3-2 against RBL Warriors to stay in fourth place.
