Fairwater Cons are the 2021-22 Cardiff and District Premier League champions after an extraordinary finale to a nail-biting title race between them and Mackintosh Sports on a night of tension and drama, to finish a superb season for both sides.
Mackintosh went into the final game of the season knowing a 5-0 win over bottom-placed Rumney British Legion would bring them level with Fairwater (who had a bye) and seal the title on games won. They started strongly with one of this season’s star performers Jason Hewett making an 86 break in the opening frame against Alex Ellis. Alan Hurley quickly made it 2-0 after he defeated Tony Parkin thanks to a 56 break and with a strong line-up in the remaining frames Mackintosh looked favourites for their first league title since 2010. However, captain Ronnie Allen’s frame went to the colours against Andy Magill who pulled off a great 27 clearance to win the frame needed to make Fairwater champions. Mackintosh kept going though and showed their class with Khurram Khan’s 58 break enough to beat Ben Harding and Brian Rees made it 4-1 after he beat Frank Deriu to leave them agonisingly one point short of their rivals.
Mackintosh Snooker finished their season in style with a 3-2 win against Trecenydd Snooker to complete their debut season with the Division One title, but they had to come from behind after Satinder Singh lost the opener to Dan Bridle. Craig Bolton levelled things with a win over Mike Pardoe, before Mackintosh took the lead thanks to Carlos Schiazza’s win over Dai Birkenshaw. Captain Mike Nessbert sealed the win after defeating Tony Williams, but Chris Garwood pulled one back in the final frame with victory against Nathan Dunne.
Canton Libs finish the season just ahead of Trecenydd in the Premier League on games won despite losing 3-2 at home to Cathays Cons who finish fifth. Ed Topham won the first against Darren Gill, before Dan Jones made it 1-1 after beating Rory Wigmore. Dan Wardle put Cathays ahead after his win over James Facey and Dave Standage completed an excellent season after he beat Luke Haines to finish third in the individual rankings. Declan O’Callaghan finished the night with victory over Mike Rathkey to clinch third-placed for Canton, who will hope to challenge the top two again next season.
Cuesaders Z and RBL Warriors’ match was an entertaining one after Cuesaders had to come from 2-0 down following Chris Johnson’s win over Rob Richards and Simon Takata beating Mike Kinman. Paul Chichester pulled one back with a win over Nick Davis and Ryan Bowgen levelled the match after defeating Mike McNamara, before Dave Reynolds completed the comeback against Syed Moshin Kazmi to win it 3-2.
Savoy and Taff’s Well’s disappointing campaigns came to a close with a tight match that the Barry side edged 3-2. Jason Summerhayes beat Glyn Jones in the first frame and Mark Bennett quickly made it 2-0 against Jimmy Llewellyn. Kevin Brown and Rob Hayes took the match to a decider following their victories over Lee Greening and Geoff Sheppard respectively, before Colin Lane won a close final frame against Tom Cross to give his side the victory.
