Spencer Symmons wins Cardiff Handicap Singles

Congratulations to Mackintosh Sports’ Spencer Symmons after he won 4-1 against Cathays Cons’ Dave Earls to win the Cardiff Handicap Singles title. After finishing runner-up on three previous occasions Symmons was looking for his first victory in this competition and he started strongly with a 51 break, but it wasn’t quite enough as Earls stayed in the frame to win it on the black to take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven match.

Earls built on his 14-point handicap in the second to move 30 points ahead, but some solid safety play from Symmons took the frame to the colours which he won to level things up at 1-1. The third frame was a closely-fought encounter and proved pivotal as Symmons managed to win to edge ahead 2-1, before dominating the next with breaks of 33 and 29 to put him one frame from the trophy.

Frame five was another close one with some good tactical play from both players, but with two reds left Symmons sank a great pot and finished with a fine 41 clearance to win the match 4-1 to add to his long list of CDSA titles.
