Fairwater Cons won 4-1 at Roath Cons this week to make it two wins out of two and pull clear of the teams below them, albeit at this early stage of the season. There was some controversy at the start of the match though as Roath Cons claimed the first frame following Fairwater’s failure to arrive by 7.45pm, but the champions didn’t let that affect them as one of last season’s form players Twm Sion Jones made three solid contributions to comfortably win to make it 1-1. Steffan Davies won the next but was made to work hard against Phil Storer who potted brown to pink but a missed black proved costly and Davies put his side 2-1 ahead. Terry Garland started strongly in the next against Andrew Champion but the Roath captain stayed in the frame until the colours, but a fluked green for Garland with position on the brown was enough to seal the match, before a 30 break from Ben Griffiths was enough to defeat Kerri-Lee Whiting and take the match 4-1.
Canton Libs made up for the disappointment of losing their opening match last week with an excellent 3-2 win away to Fairwater Cons Mack to move up to joint third in the table. They had to come from behind though after Jason Hewett defeated Rory Wigmore in the opener, but James Facey levelled things up with a win over Alan Hurley. Declan O’Callaghan maintained his unbeaten start to the season with victory over Ronnie Allen, before Luke Haines made sure of the win after comfortably beating Khurram Khan, with Brian Rees winning a consolation frame against Tony Chick in the last frame.
Cathays Cons won 3-2 at RBL Warriors to put last week’s defeat behind them with Mike Rathkey beating Chris Johnson and Darren Gill winning against Jason Veal to put them 2-0 up. However, Nick Davies and Simon Takata levelled the match with wins against Dave Standage and Dave Earls respectively, before Ryan Bowgen won the decider against Sid Kazmi to move Gill’s side into a share of third place.
Beech Tree Hotel made an excellent start to the season after a bye last week with a 3-2 win away to Taff’s Well. Dan Bridle won a close opening frame on the black against Kevin Jones, before David Rideout beat Glyn Jones on the colours to make it 2-0. Jimmy Llewellyn pulled one back with a win over Craig Fletcher, but it looked like being in vain as Mike Pardoe raced to a 40-point lead against Kevin Brown in the next. The Taff’s Well captain showed excellent resilience to take the frame to the colours with a 25 break, before producing one of the shots of the season so far to pot the black and keep his side in the match at 2-2. However, it was Beech Tree who had the final say with Ciaran Paul showing good form to make a 30 break in beating Rob Hayes in the decider.
Savoy registered their first win of the season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Rumney British Legion, with Mark Bennett and Dave Stringer putting them 2-0 up with wins over Alex Ellis and Paul Chichester respectively. Andy Magill pulled one back after he beat Dave Turn before Jeff Lane sealed the win against Ben Harding and Lee Greening beat Tony Parkin to get the Barry’s side campaign up-and-running.
