Premier League champions Fairwater Cons laid down a huge marker for this year’s competition with a resounding 5-0 away win at title rivals Canton Libs to increase their lead at the top of the table to five points. Their dominant start to the season continued with a win in the opening frame for Twm Sion Jones against Ed Topham, before Terry Garland became the first player to defeat Declan O’Callaghan to take his place at the top of the individual rankings. Steffan Davies then made it 3-0 with victory over Luke Haines before a 34 break from Shaun O’Connell was enough to overcome Rory Wigmore, and a comfortable win for Ben Griffiths against James Wigmore on last capped off a superb night for the title favourites.
It’s looking like a two-horse race as last year’s runners-up Fairwater Cons Mack kept pace after a 3-2 win versus Savoy, with Brian Rees getting them off to a flyer with a 47 break being enough to defeat Jeff Lane. However, Savoy levelled things up after Mark Bennett beat Jason Hewett, but a superb 67 break from Alan Hurley against Colin Lane put them 2-1 ahead. Khurram Khan sealed the win after beating Geoff Sheppard, but Dave Hurn pulled one back in a very high-scoring encounter against Ronnie Allen.
Beech Tree Hotel’s superb run of form continued this week with a 4-1 home win over Mackintosh Snooker to move them up into third place level on points with Cathays Cons who defeated Rumney British Legion 3-2, but they had to come from behind after Paul Chichester beat Mike Rathkey in the opening frame. Dave Standage made it 1-1 after defeating Frank Deriu and it was quickly 2-1 after Martyn Evans’ dominant performance against Tony Parkin. Captain Darren Gill then made it 3-1 after a win over Andy Magill, but Graeme Prance’s close victory over Jason Summerhayes helped Rumney finish on a high.
Taff’s Well won for the first time since the opening week of the season with a 5-0 win over Roath Cons with a 38 break from Rhys Carpenter against Rob Reid and a win for Jimmy Llewellyn over Alan Wright making it 2-0. Wins for Tom Cross and Kevin Brown against Andrew Champion and Presley Cornock respectively doubled their lead before Rob Hayes won the final frame against Lee Cornock to complete the whitewash.
