Competitions Reach Latter Stages

The individual competitions in the CDSA have reached the quarter and semi-finals so let’s take a look at what is happening in the four singles and pairs events as we head towards the final stages of the season –

Cardiff Open Singles

Rhys Carpenter v Jason Hewett
Steffan Davies v Brian Rees

Terry Garland v Nick Davis
Twm Sion Jones v Khurram Khan

The top half of the draw was stacked this year with numerous ex-winners but defending champion Ryan Rowlands’ exit at the hands of Steffan Davies in the quarter-finals has meant no-one will have won back-to-back titles for 20 years, whereas the bottom half of the draw is guaranteed to have a first-time finalist.

Cardiff Handicap Singles

Khurram Khan v James Wigmore
James Facey v Nick Davis

Steffan Davies v Dan Bridle
Jason Summerhayes v Jason Hewett

There will be a new name on the Cardiff Handicap Singles trophy this year as all eight remianing players have yet to win the title, with only Steffan Davies having made the final back in 2019 when he lost to Chris Garwood.

Cardiff Open Pairs

Brian Rees & Jason Hewett v Dave Standage & Martyn Evans

Jason Veal & Nick Davis v Rhys Carpenter & Jimmy Llewellyn

Jason Hewett and Brian Rees are strong favourites to defend their title after beating Luke Haines and Ed Topham in last year’s final, but all three others pairs will be looking to stop them and win it for the first time as pairings, with Rhys Carpenter and Jimmy Llewellyn both winning it in previous years.

Cardiff Handicap Pairs

Declan O’Callaghan & James Wigmore v Brian Rees & Jason Hewett

Steve Flanagan & Shaun O’Connell v Dan Bridle & Mike Pardoe

Brian Rees and Jason Hewett will be looking to make it a doubles double in this competition but O’Callaghan and Wigmore will be a stern test in the seim-finals after they knocked out defending champions Jones and Garland in the last round, with previous runners-up Flanagan & O’Connell looking to defeat Bridle & Pardoe to face them in the final.
