Taff’s Well and Fairwater Lead the Way

Taff’s Well remain top of the Premier League table after a 4-1 win at home to County Cons maintained their unbeaten start to the season. However, they had to come from behind as Dan Wardle defeated Glyn Jones in the opening frame, but wins for Kevin Brown against Dave Standage and Tom Cross over Mike Rathkey saw them go 2-1 ahead. Jimmy Llewellyn’s defeat of Martyn Evans saw them seal the match win and Rob Hayes finished off a good night’s work for his side after beating Dave Earls.

Their closest rivals at this stage are Fairwater Cons who closed the gap on them at the top to a single point after a 5-0 win over Roath Cons. Twm Sion Jones is one of four players with a 100% record and he won the opener against Rob Baker, before Terry Garland doubled their lead with victory over Andrew Champion. Wins for Steve Flanagan and Shaun O’Connell against Alan Wright and Rob Reid respectively made it 4-0, before Jason Hewett’s win over Lee Cornock completed the whitewash.

Canton Libs got their season up-and-running with their first league win of the campaign after they won 3-2 at Rumney British Legion. Declan O’Callaghan started the match with a bang as he notched up a century of points against Paul Chichester, although he missed a straightforward black on 32 when a big break looked likely. Luke Haines made it 2-0 with a win over Frank Deriu, before Ethan Chichester pulled one back against Rory Wigmore. Another missed black cost James Wigmore a place on the breaks board as he made a 31 in his victory over Andy McGill, but Tony Parkin made the scoreline more respectable as he won the final frame against Tony Chick.

Mackintosh Snooker moved up to mid-table as they beat Macky Misfits, who themselves move up to fourth place despite the defeat. Mike Nessbert won the opening frame against Deepak Singh, before Jacob Boyle’s defeat of Carlos Schiazza levelled the match. Billy Connors restored the home side’s lead after beating Satinder Singh, but the match was taken to a final frame after Callum Jones’s close win over Renato Ridolini. The decider went to the colours, but the Misfits’ Steve Wellbeloved maintained his brilliant start to his comeback season with a win against Nathan Dunne to move into fifth place in the individual rankings.

This week’s League Cup match saw a very close encounter between Caerphilly A and Taff’s Well Warriors that went right to the wire in the final doubles frame. Simon Takata got his side off to a great start as he defeated Nural Khan thanks to a thin cut on the black and the Warriors were 2-0 up as Nick Davis beat Steffan Davies in the next. Ben Griffiths kept Caerphilly in the match as he defeated Luke Sheppard, and then he teamed up with Davies to beat Geoff Sheppard and Nick Davis in the deciding doubles frame to take the match 3-2.
