Champions Begin Defence with Victory

Breaks

Nural Khan 45 (Caerphilly A)
Rob Hayes 35 (Taff’s Well)

Fairwater Cons got their title defence off to a winning start as they won 4-1 against Roath Cons, but they had to come back from behind as Tony Storer beat Twm Sion Jones in the opening frame. Jason Hewett levelled the match after defeating Alan Wright and Luke Pitman put Fairwater ahead with victory over Matthew Reid. Shaun O’Connell’s comfortable win against Rob Reid and Dan Bridle’s defeat of Lee Cornock on the colours sealed the win as they look to win successive league titles.

That result was matched by Mackintosh Snooker as they got off to a very good start with a 4-1 win at County Cons, with Eassa Din beating Darren Gill in the opening frame and Carlo Schiazza made it 2-0 after defeating Dave Earls. Mike Nessbert sealed the victory after his win over Danny Wardle, but John Hicks managed to pull a frame back on the colours against Billy Connors before Nathan Dunne completed a good night’s work for the Mack after he beat Dave Standage in the final frame.

The opening frame of Taff’s Well v last year’s runners-up Caerphilly A was a very tense affair as Rhys Carpenter opened up an early 40-point lead over Rob McKenna, but the former world 8-ball pool champion managed to close the gap to take the frame to the colours. Both players had chances but neither player could clinch it until a very good pink with the rest from McKenna landed perfectly on the black to seal the frame. The second frame saw last season’s Cardiff Open champion face the Player of the Year as some fluent potting from Allan Morgan saw him defeat Kevin Brown to double their lead. Steffan Davies made it 3-0 to Caerphilly after beating Jimmy Llewellyn on the colours, before a 45 break from Nural Khan looked to have won the next against Glyn Jones. However, good matchplay and solid potting saw Jones reduce the gap as the frame headed towards the colours, but despite Jones gaining some penalty points, Khan sealed the frame on the blue. Facing a whitewash, Rob Hayes managed to win a consolation for Taff’s Well after a 35 break contributed to a comfortable win in the final frame against Ben Griffiths, but Caerphilly will be pleased with an excellent start to their pursuit of the title.

Macky Misfits enjoyed a great start to the season as the won 4-1 away to Canton Libs, with Shootout champion Jacob Boyle beating James Facey before a pivotal second frame saw James Wigmore claw back an early 50-point deficit against Satinder Singh before losing on the black. Graeme Prance made it 3-0 to the Misfits with victory over Tony Chick, but Ed Topham comfortably won the fourth frame for Canton against Steve Wellbeloved before Bill Bainton completed the win for the Misfits after defeating Rory Wigmore.

The closest match of the week came at Rumney British Legion as a final frame decider gave Canton Warriors a 3-2 victory. The opening two frames saw Jason Veal and Andy Holman beat Rob Baker and Justin Behnan respectively to give them a 2-0 lead, before Paul Chichester reduced the deficit after beating Chris Richards. A low-scoring fourth frame was won by Ben Harding against Geoff Sheppard to take it to a decider, but Dave Richards overcame Tony Parkin to complete the win for Canton.
