Jacob Boyle 35 (Macky Misfits)
The Malcolm Keenor Trophy started this week, with last season’s runners-up Mackintosh Snooker handed a walkover as their opponents Canton Libs couldn’t fulfil the fixture resulting in the award of a 5-0 win. However, the match of the week came at Fairwater Cons as Canton Warriors registered back-to-back victories following their win in the league last week. The match started with one of the frames of recent years as Jason Hewett took on doubles partner Brian Rees, with both players looking to give their side the early advantage. Rees started strongly and built a 30-point lead, but an excellent snooker from Hewett reduced the deficit and gave him the chance to pot a tricky red in the middle pocket, which he sank and complied a 30 break to lead as the frame entered the colours. However, Rees hit back and was seven ahead on the black, but Hewett potted it to take the frame to a re-spot and held his nerve to complete the win and give Fairwater a 1-0 lead. Single ball potting and very good safety play from Chris Johnson and Terry Garland in the next saw the frame go to the colours, with Johnson potting pink and black to level the match. Jason Summerhayes comfortably won the next frame against Steve Flanagan thanks to a 31 break, before a high-scoring contest saw Dan Bridle pot pink and black versus Mike Watts to take the match to a decider. After last week’s heroics, Jason Veal once again saw himself lining up to get his team over the line and he didn’t disappoint against Twm Sion Jones as he quickly wrapped up the win, to cap off an excellent night’s work for Chris Johnson’s side and move them to the top of Group A at this early stage.
In Group B, Roath Cons faced County Cons which following the Mackintosh’s walkover win took on extra importance for both sides, as only the top two in each group qualify for the semi-finals. John Hicks won a close opening frame against Alan Wright, before Martyn Evans’ win over Lee Cornock doubled County’s lead. Wins for Dave Earls and Dave Standage against Andrew Champion and Mathew Reid made it 4-0, but Tony Storer’s defeat of Darren Gill gave Roath a consolation frame.
Taff’s Well begun their campaign in Group A with a 3-2 win at home to Macky Misfits, with captain Kevin Brown leading them off with a victory over Steve Wellbeloved. Jacob Boyle quickly made it 1-1 as a 35 break contributed to his win against Glyn Jones, before Rob Hayes restored the home side’s lead after defeating Renato Ridolini. An entertaining fourth frame saw Jimmy Llewellyn beat Bill Bainton on the colours to seal the match, but fluent potting from William Eades pulled one back for the Misfits against Justin Jones.
