Jason Hewett 35 (Fairwater Cons)
Canton Libs produced the result of the week as they beat Taff’s Well 4-1 to move into the top half of the table in an entertaining match featuring several very close frames. A 32 break from James Facey saw him defeat Rhys Carpenter on the black, before solid matchplay from Luke Haines made it 2-0 against Justin Jones. A fluent potting display from Rory Wigmore sealed the win for his side against Glyn Jones, but Taff’s Well pulled one back as Jimmy Llewellyn managed to pot pink and black to defeat Tony Chick. The match finished with a high-quality frame as a 30 break from Ed Topham gave him an early lead against Rob Hayes, who hit back with some good potting to get back to all-square as the match approached the final few reds. Topham was in fluent form though and he took advantage of a chance to make a 32 break, which proved to be enough as Hayes was unable to secure the penalty points needed to cap off an excellent night for the Libs.
Caerphilly A had to overcome the loss of the opening frame in their match against Macky Misfits as Shootout champion Jacob Boyle comfortably beat Nural Khan, but they drew level after Owen Fear won a close frame versus William Eades. Steffan Davies won another tight frame as he defeated Graeme Prance to move 2-1 ahead and captain Ben Griffiths secured the win after beating Satinder Singh. Knowing the importance of every frame in their chase for the title, Ian Denton managed to finish things off for Caerphilly against Steve Wellbeloved to remain in first place.
Champions Fairwater Cons are in second place after a 4-1 away win at Rumney British Legion, with Dan Bridle winning the opening frame on the colours against Glyn Hayes. Jason Hewett comfortably beat Ben Harding thanks to a 35 break to double their lead, before Steve Flanagan’s win over Frank Deriu made it 3-0. Paul Chichester pulled one back after beating Shaun O’Connell, but Terry Garland finished things off for Fairwater after defeating Andy McGill in the final frame.
Mackintosh Snooker are level with Fairwater after their 3-2 win at Canton Warriors, with Eassa Din winning comfortably against Simon Takata in the opening frame, before a dominant performance from Carlo Schiazza saw them move 2-0 up after he defeated Jason Veal. A high-scoring encounter in the next saw Chris Johnson build a 50-point lead over Mike Nessbert, before the Mack captain hit back to take it to the colours but the Warriors’ captain held his nerve to reduce the deficit. An impressive showing from Brian Rees levelled the match after his win over Billy Connors, but Nathan Dunne built on a good start in the deciding frame against Andy Holman to win on the colours and keep up the Mack’s impressive start to the season.
The biggest margin of victory came at Roath Cons as County Cons registered a 5-0 win with Dave Standage beating Andrew Champion and Danny Wardle defeating Tony Storer in the opening two frames. Darren Gill’s win over Rob Reid and Dave Earls’ defeat of Chris Harding made it 4-0, before Ryan Bowgen completed the whitewash after his victory over Lee Cornock on the colours.
