The CDSA Premier League resumed after the Christmas break with champions Fairwater looking to reduce the gap to leaders Caerphilly A with eight league matches remaining until the end of the season. Twm Sion Jones got them off to the perfect start at home to Canton Warriors as a 50 clearance to the pink saw him beat Dave Richards in the opening frame. However, it wasn’t the highest break of the night as Jason Hewett’s 56 break saw him defeat Chris Johnson to double their lead, before Terry Garland’s win over Brian Rees made it 3-0. One of the frames of the season followed next as Andy Holman led Dan Bridle by 36 points going into the colours, but Bridle managed to gain 8 penalty points through snookers before he potted a free ball and then cleared the table for a remarkable 75-74 victory. Canton were hoping for a consolation in the final frame but it wasn’t to be as Jason Veal lost a close frame on the pink to Shaun O’Connell to complete an excellent win for Steve Flanagan’s side.
The result of the week came at Mackintosh Snooker as Premier League leaders Caerphilly A won a closely-fought match 3-2 to maintain a lead over challengers Fairwater Cons. Rob McKenna won the opener against Billy Connors before Steffan Davies made it 2-0 after he beat Carlo Schiazza. Eassa Din’s victory over Nural Khan pulled one back for the Mack, but a 46 break for Khurram Khan gave Caerphilly the win before Nathan Dunne reduced the deficit after he defeated Ben Griffiths.
Taff’s Well moved into fourth place as they won 4-1 at home to Roath Cons, with wins for Rhys Carpenter against Andrew Champion and Justin Jones over Chris Harding giving them a 2-0 lead. Alan Wright reduced the deficit as he beat Glyn Jones, but fluent potting from Kevin Brown restored Taff’s Well’s two-frame advantage, before Rob Hayes completed the win as he defeated Lee Cornock.
The Division One title race looks like being an exciting one with a number of teams in contention, but Macky Misfits lead the way after their 3-2 win at County Cons. Jacob Boyle won the opening frame versus Ryan Bowgen, before William Eades’ win on the black against John Hicks doubled their lead. Two 32 breaks from Satinder Singh saw him defeat Suhayb Din to make it 3-0, but wins for Martyn Evans and Dave Standage against Richard Duggan and Steve Wellbeloved respectively pulled two frames back for the Cons.
Rumney British Legion are only three points behind the leaders in second place, as they beat an under-strength Canton Libs team 5-0 at home. A 39 break for Ethan Chichester was enough to win a close first frame against James Wigmore, before Paul Chichester made it 2-0 with a win over Ronnie Allen. Andy McGill’s defeat of Tony Chick made sure of the win and walkover frames for Glyn Hayes and Frank Deriu completed the whitewash for Rumney.
