Rumney and Taff’s Well Hold Advantage

Breaks

Dave Earls 44 (County Cons)

Rumney British Legion and Taff’s Well have the advantage after the first leg of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy as they both registered home wins against Caerphilly A and Mackintosh Snooker respectively.

However, Rumney lost the opening two frames as Steffan Davies’s win against Paul Chichester was followed by Ben Griffiths’ close defeat of Glyn Hayes. Another close contest saw Ben Harding pull one back after he beat Nural Khan before Andy McGill’s comfortable win over Allan Jones made it 2-2, and the comeback was completed by Ethan Chichester as he defeated Ian Denton on the colours.

Taff’s Well hold a bigger lead over last year’s runners-up Mackintosh Snooker as they won a close match 4-1, but lost the opening frame as a 33 break from Jerry Connors saw him defeat Rhys Carpenter. Justin Jones made it 1-1 as he beat Eassa Din on the blue, before Glyn Jones gave Taff’s Well the lead as he won on a respotted black against Nathan Dunne. Carlo Schiazza established an early 40-point lead over Kevin Brown, but the Taff’s Well captain gradually reduced the deficit and sealed the frame with an excellent black to make it 3-1. With a visit to Mackintosh in the second leg, both sides knew the importance of the last frame but it was comfortably won by Jimmy Llewellyn versus Mike Nessbert to give Taff’s Well a sizeable advantage at the halfway point in the match.

The two CDSA Plate semi-finals were both close affairs as they away teams Macky Misfits and County Cons both won 3-2 against Canton Libs and Fairwater Cons respectively.

Canton Libs will be looking to overturn that deficit in the second leg and they gave themselves the chance despite only having three players for their match against the Misfits. Tony Chick lost a close opener versus William Eades, but wins for Rory Wigmore against Satinder Singh and Ronnie Allen over Richard Duggan gave Canton the lead before two bye victories for Jacob Boyle and Steve Wellbeloved meant the Misfits sealed the win.

Fairwater Cons won the first two frames against County Cons and looked on course for the victory after Terry Garland’s comfortable win over John Hicks was followed by a 33 break for Shaun O’Connell as he defeated Nick Bevan to make it 2-0. However, the highest break of the week came in the next frame as a 44 from Dave Earls saw him beat Dan Bridle to pull one back and the frame of the night saw Dave Standage win a high-scoring contest versus Twm Sion Jones on the black, before Suhayb Din’s win against Steve Flanagan in the decider capped off an excellent performance for County as they look to reach the final for the first time.

Canton Warriors lead the medal match against Roath Cons after a 4-1 win, but they had to come from behind as Andrew Champion defeated Dave Richards in the opening frame. Mike Watts beat Rob Reid to level the match before Andy Holman’s win over Alan Wright on the colours gave Canton the lead. Geoff Sheppard sealed the win after he defeated Chris Harding and Chris Johnson completed the victory as he beat Lee Cornock.
