Breaks
Nural Khan 50 (Caerphilly A)
Caerphilly A remain at the top of the Premier League after a 3-2 win away to County Cons saw them continue their unbeaten start to the season. Khurram Khan comfortably won the opening frame against Ryan Bowgen, before Nural Khan produced the individual performance of the week with a 50 break as he defeated Dave Standage to make it 2-0. However, County hit back in the next frame as Darren Gill beat Dave Hartnell, before Dave Earls’ win over Ian Denton drew them level but captain Ben Griffiths won the decider against Suhayb Din to give his side the victory.
Macky Misfits are the only other side with a 100% record as they matched Caerphilly’s result away to Rumney British Legion. Graeme Prance won the opener against Rob Baker, before Jacob Boyle became one of only three players in the league to win his opening three league matches against Albert Columbo to double their lead. Ethan Chichester pulled one back after beating William Eades, but another of the players at the top of the rankings, Satinder Singh beat Andy McGill to make it 3-1, before Rumney managed to win the final frame as Ben Harding won a close frame on the colours against Bill Bainton.
The result of the week saw Mackintosh Snooker complete a 5-0 whitewash over Roath Cons, with Eassa Din beating Alan Wright before Carlo Schiazza’s win versus Tony Storer put them 2-0 ahead. Mike Nessbert comfortably won the next against Rob Reid to secure the win, and victories for Billy Connors and Nathan Dunne over Andrew Champion and Lee Cornock respectively mean the Mack find themselves in third place in the table.
Reigning champions Fairwater Cons had to work very hard to beat Canton Libs 3-2 in the match of the week, and they had to come from behind as Luke Haines defeated Jason Hewett on the black, before a superb 34 clearance from Rory Wigmore saw him beat Twm Sion Jones to make it 2-0. An entertaining third frame saw James Wigmore get two snookers on the blue against Luke Pitman, but it was in vain as Fairwater pulled one back before Shaun O’Connell won a crucial frame on the brown versus Ed Topham and Terry Garland won the decider against Tony Chick to complete an excellent comeback.
There was another close match at Taff’s Well as they faced in-form Canton Warriors with Rhys Carpenter winning a tight first frame on the black against Jason Veal, before Chris Johnson levelled the match with another black ball finish versus Justin Jones. Jimmy Llewellyn restored Taff’s Well’s lead with victory over Dave Richards, before the frame of the night saw Brian Rees establish an early lead over Glyn Jones with a 32 break. However, some excellent matchplay and clinical potting saw Jones close the gap and then move snookers ahead, and despite a brilliant snooker on the pink from Rees, Jones kept his nerve to win the match for Taff’s Well. There was another very good potting performance in the next frame though as Andy Holman defeated last season’s Player of the Year, Kevin Brown to make it 3-2 to give a fairer reflection of the match and leaves both sides in joint-fifth with identical records.
