The Premier League title race is hotting up as Fairwater Cons continued to close the gap on rivals Caerphilly A, and with six league games remaining it may come down to the final match of the season when the two sides face each other. At the start of December the gap was nine points but after Fairwater beat Canton Libs 4-1 this week, the deficit has been reduced to just three points. Twm Sion Jones won the opener against Luke Haines before Jason Hewett doubled their lead with victory over Rory Wigmore. Terry Garland continued his superb individual form as he maintained his 100% record to stay at the top of the individual rankings after he defeated James Wigmore, but Ronnie Allen pulled one back after beating Dan Bridle in a high-scoring frame before Shaun O’Connell finished things off for Fairwater with a win on the black versus Tony Chick.
However, Caerphilly’s relentless form saw them win again as they defeated County Cons 3-2 at home, with Rob McKenna and Steffan Davies winning the opening two frames against Nick Bevan and Ryan Bowgen respectively. Martyn Evans’ win over Ian Denton pulled one back before a 55 break from Nural Khan saw him defeat Suhayb Din, but Dave Standage won the final frame for County against Ben Griffiths to reduce the deficit.
Mackintosh Snooker consolidated their hold on third place as the won 4-1 away to Roath Cons, with Eassa Din beating Chris Harding and Carlo Schiazza defeating Alan Wright to make it 2-0. Billy Connors’ close win over Rob Reid sealed the victory, but Andrew Champion’s defeat of Mike Nessbert on the colours gave Roath a consolation frame before another tight frame saw Nathan Dunne beat Lee Cornock to finish things off for the Mack.
Macky Misfits have extended their lead at the top of Division One as they beat title rivals Rumney British Legion 4-1 to move seven points clear. Satinder Singh won the opener on the black against Rob Baker, before a 43 clearance from Jacob Boyle sealed his win over Ben Harding to make it 2-0. Paul Chichester’s comfortable victory over William Eades pulled one back for Rumney, but wins for Graeme Prance versus Glyn Hayes and Bill Bainton against Frank Deriu capped off a very good performance for their side.
Taff’s Well won a close match 3-2 at Canton Warriors to extend the gap on them at the bottom of the Premier League, but they had to come from behind as fine matchplay from Simon Takata saw him beat Rhys Carpenter in the first frame. Chris Johnson opened up an early lead on Justin Jones, but solid potting and safety saw Jones seal the win on the colours to make it 1-1. The next frame was also decided on the colours as Dave Richards defeated Glyn Jones, before Rob Hayes levelled the match with victory over Andy Holman and captain Kevin Brown completed the comeback for Taff’s Well as he beat Geoff Sheppard to seal the win.
