Mack Sports & Cathays Cons victorious in Division Cup Finals

The 2013-14 season’s first pieces of silverware have been won by Mackintosh Sports and Cathays Cons over Premier Division champions Savoy and local rivals Park Club respectively last night in Taffs Well.
The Premier Division Cup was comprehensively (and relatively quickly) won by the Mack 3-0. First frame saw Jason Hewitt take on Mark Bennett in a match up many had come to expect. Unsurprisingly, the frame didn’t last long as Hewitt gave the Mack the lead with the help of a 34 break. Spencer Symmons doubled the lead against Colin Lane but the third frame proved to be more competitive. Ryan Rowland had the early lead before Ronnie Allen fought back to lead by 1 going into the colours. Good safety and solid potting saw Allen over the line giving his team the Cup win.
Cathays Cons had to dig much deeper in their Division One Cup final against Park Club. Coming back from 0-1 and 1-2, Mike Rathkey was spurred on by the rest of his team to overcome great Bennett to force the decider. Captain Dave Standage made a series of small breaks to goes snookers up into the colours. His opponent, Bernard Hutchings, fought on but to no avail as Cathays took the lead at the only time that mattered and win the Division One Cup.
Big congratulations to all who competed and spectated in Taffs Well. Special thank you to Kevin Jones and Taffs Well Ex-Servicemens Club for refereeing and hosting the event.
One more week of league fixtures is left to play in 2013 before the Christmas break. 2014 will see the conclusion of the league and the start of the Interdivision League Cup.
