Savoy step closer to title with crucial win at Fairwater; 12 in a row for Bennett and Hewitt

Can anyone hunt down Savoy? The long-time Premier League leaders extended their advantage this week, winning perhaps their toughest match, away at Fairwater, while their closest rivals were happy to escape with only a 2-3 reversal against a rejuvenated Penarth Road, whose line-up would probably look stronger than those fielded by any other side. Tom Cross’ respottted black win over Jay Morris kept County above Penarth, but they passed Fairwater into third, and Trec used the clashes between the leading sides to re-involve themselves, thanks to a win over Canton by 4 frames to 1.
Park Cons may have struck a decisive blow in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon, with a 4-1 win over South Wales Snooker, while bragging rights go to the B side at Mackintosh, who ignored Jason Hewett’s ongoing unbeaten run and still put themselves above the Mack A side. That really has been a ding dong battle all season, and it’s not over yet. But can we say the same for the league title? Savoy haven’t won it in the past thirty five years, but it does not look as though one team will have to go unbeaten to the end of the season to bridge the gap. And that’s unlikely, in such a well balanced division.

Congratulations to those who made breaks this week. Two contributions of above forty came from Sam Thomas and Neil Tomkins (in about 56 seconds!) but Duane Jones made the highest break with an 83. Jason Hewett and Mark Bennett remain at 100% after 12 matches whilst Anthony Davies and Rob Hayes are also building up good unblemished records.
