Brian Rees 76 (Mackintosh Sports)
Mackintosh Sports have put themselves back into contention for a place in the Malcolm Keenor Trophy final after an emphatic 5-0 win against an under-strength RBL Warriors sent them to the top of the group. Brian Rees got them off to the perfect start after he recorded the highest break of the season so far with a 76 to beat Jason Veal, before a bye for Alan Hurley put them 2-0 up. Clive Marsh then defeated Mike Watts, which was followed with a bye for Ronnie Allen. Steve Wellbeloved then finished things off with a win over Syed Moshin Kazmi to give them the whitewash.
Cuesaders Z are just behind them in second place after they won 4-1 against Taff’s Well with Paul Chichester giving them the lead after he beat Nick Jones in the opening frame. Glyn Jones then looked like he was going to level things up after building a 42-point lead over Graeme Prance, but some good matchplay from the Cuesaders Z captain saw him close the gap and win on the pink. Another close frame in the next saw Mike Kinman overcome Scott Miners again on the pink, before Jimmy Llewellyn pulled one back with a win against Dave Reynolds. However, Ryan Bowgen sealed an impressive win with some great long potting in the final frame to defeat Tom Cross and boost his side’s chances of clinching a spot in the final in June.
They will have to finish above Trecenydd Snooker though after a 3-2 win over Cathays Cons moved them level on points with Cuesaders. Mike Pardoe won the opener versus Mike Rathkey, before Dan Bridle beat Dave Standage to make it 2-0. Darren Gill narrowed the deficit after he beat Dai Birkenshaw and Dave Earls took the match to a decider after he won against Tony Williams, but Chris Garwood sealed the win for his side with victory over Dan Jones.
Savoy are top of the Plate group after a 4-1 win over an under-strength Canton Libs side, although they had to come from behind after James Facey defeated Lee Greening. Wins for Dave Hurn against James Wigmore and a bye for Colin Lane put Savoy 2-1 up, before Jason Summerhayes and Jeff Lane beat Andy Wigmore and Tony Chick respectively to ensure they remain favourites for a place in the final. In the other match of the night, Mackintosh Snooker defeated Rumney British Legion 3-2 to keep themselves in the running for a top two spot.
