Fairwater Cons took a big step towards defending their title this week with a 4-1 win over title rivals Canton Libs in one of the matches of the season. Twm Sion Jones was in fine form as he won the opening frame against Luke Haines with breaks of 34 and 27 to get his side off to the perfect start. The frame of the match saw Ed Topham sink a great opening red before breaking down on 25, with Ben Griffiths hitting back with an excellent 57 break and eventually sealing the win on the blue. Terry Garland then clinched the win thanks to a 36 break to beat Rory Wigmore, before Steffan Davies made it 4-0 after winning a close frame against Declan O’Callaghan. However, Canton captain James Wigmore won a consolation frame in the last with contributions of 34 and 33 to finish off a closely-fought and entertaining match.

Their main rivals for the title Mackintosh Sports are still hot on their heels though after a 3-2 win away to RBL Warriors, with reigning Cardiff Open champion Jason Hewett showing his class with a superb 90 break to put his side 1-0 up. Nick Davis hit back for the Warriors though with a win over Alan Hurley thanks to a 31 break, before Brian Rees restored the Mack’s lead after he beat Syed Moshin Kazmi. Khurram Khan made it 3-1 win after a 36 break was enough to beat Mike Watts, but Simon Takata ensured a close result after he defeated Ronnie Allen to make it 3-2.

Mackintosh Snooker increased their lead at the top of Division One after a resounding 5-0 win over Rumney British Legion and their closest rival Cuesaders Z lost 3-2 at home to Taff’s Well. Cuesaders won the opening frame though as Paul Chichester was in good form as he beat Nick Jones, before Jimmy Llewellyn levelled things after a very good 25 clearance clinched the win against Ryan Bowgen. Dave Reynolds then restored their lead with a win over Glyn Jones, before Kevin Brown comfortably beat Mike Kinman to make it 2-2. The decider was an extraordinary frame as Rob Hayes beat Graeme Prance with the Cuesaders Z captain giving away 47 points in fouls to give Taff’s Well the 3-2 victory.

Cathays Cons closed the gap on Trecenydd Snooker in the Premier League to two points after they won a close contest 3-2, but they had to come from behind after Danny Wardle beat Dan Bridle and Tony Williams beat Darren Gill to put Trec 2-0 up. However, wins for Dan Jones against Dai Rideout and Dave Earls over Chris Garwood took the match to a decider, with Dave Standage continuing his excellent form to beat Kristian Crocker.
