Rumney British Legion moved up to second place in Group A of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy after a sensational 5-0 defeat of reigning champions Fairwater Cons Mack. The competition is handicapped and a more level playing field has led to unpredictable matches and unexpected outcomes over the years, and after a close first frame win for Alex Ellis over Khurram Khan, Rumney increased in confidence to register the result of the season so far. Paul Chichester made it 2-0 after his victory over Jason Hewett and the win was sealed when Frank Deriu beat Ronnie Allen. With every point crucial in deciding who qualifies for the semi-finals, Rumney didn’t let up and wins for Albert Columbo against Alan Hurley and Tony Parkin over Brian Rees finished off an emphatic win for Deriu’s side.

Fairwater Cons are top of Group A on matches won after a closely-fought 3-2 win at Mackintosh Snooker. Ben Griffiths won the opening frame against Carlos Schiazza before Steffan Davies made it 2-0 after beating Nathan Dunne on the blue. Jerry Connors pulled one back against Shaun O’Connell and Mike Nessbert won the captains’ frame and in doing so levelled things up at 2-2 with a close win over Steve Flanagan. Twm Sion Jones and Billy Connors played out an entertaining deciding frame with Jones overcoming an early deficit to win on the colours and take the match for Fairwater.

Beech Tree Hotel’s good form continued as they beat Cathays Cons 4-1 to move into third place in the group with Mike Pardoe getting them off to a good start with a win over Mike Rathkey. Dan Bridle then doubled their lead after defeating Dave Standage, before Ciaran Paul made it 3-0 with a close win over Dave Earls. Dai Rideout then comfortably beat Darren Gill to put hise side 4-0 up, but Martyn Evans won a consolation frame against Craig Fletcher for Cathays.

Roath Cons won their first match of the season to move joint top of Group B after the beat RBL Warriors 3-2 at home. Andrew Champion won the opener against Chris Johnson before Mike Watts beat Kerri Whiting to make it 1-1. Ben Harding put RBL in front with a win over Alan Wright but Lee Cornock kept his side in it with a win on the black versus Jason Veal, before Presley Cornock beat Simon Takata in the deciding frame to give Roath the victory.

Taff’s Well remain in joint top but suffered a heavy defeat to Canton Libs after James Wigmore’s side won 4-1 to get their campaign off to an excellent start. Rory Wigmore and Ed Topham put them 2-0 up with wins over Jimmy Llewellyn and Ian Purnell respectively before the individual highlight of the season so far saw Kevin Brown register a superb 87 break, missing the final red when a century break looked likely. That win over James Facey looked like getting his side back into the match but some good potting from Tony Chick against Rob Hayes saw Canton seal the victory and it was finished off by their captain Wigmore whose break of 38 was enough to see off Tom Cross and complete a great night for his side.
