Taff’s Well and Caerphilly Seal Final Spots

Ryan Bowgen 42 (County Cons)

Taff’s Well have booked a place in the Malcolm Keenor Trophy final after they drew 2-2 at Mackintosh Snooker to win 6-3 on aggregate, as they look to win the competition for the second time in three years. Contesting their third consecutive semi-final in this competition, it was again a closely-fought affair, although with a 4-1 advantage from the first leg Taff’s Well knew two frames would be enough to seal a final spot. However, it was Mackintosh who made the stronger start with Jerry Connors winning a very close opening frame on the black against Kevin Brown, before some excellent safety play and solid potting saw Mike Nessbert double his side’s lead after beating Rhys Carpenter. With the score at 4-3 there was everything to play for, but Jimmy Llewellyn comfortably won the next against Nathan Dunne to leave Taff’s Well one frame from victory, and Justin Jones completed a very good night’s work for his side after his defeat of Eassa Din on the colours.

The other semi-final between Caerphilly A and Rumney British Legion was a very tight affair as Caerphilly looked to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg, and they made an excellent start as wins for Khurram Khan (46 break) over Ben Harding and Ben Griffiths against Glyn Hayes gave them a 2-0 lead on the night. A 40 break from Allan Morgan saw him defeat Andy McGill to give Caerphilly a 5-3 aggregate lead, but Ethan Chichester beat Steffan Davies on the pink to keep Rumney in the match. Paul Chichester then took the frame to a playoff as he beat Nural Khan, but Khan stayed on the table to defeat Ethan Chichester on the colours to win the match 6-5 for Caerphilly.

The CDSA Plate final will see holders Canton Libs face Fairwater Cons after both teams had to win a playoff frame in their semi-finals against Macky Misfits and County Cons respectively.

Canton were 3-2 down after the first leg and the Misfits looked favourites for the final after Jacob Boyle won the opener against Ronnie Allen. James Wigmore drew them level on the night after beating Bill Bainton and Rory Wigmore’s win over William Eades meant the tie was 4-4, but Satinder Singh beat Tony Chick to leave the Misfits one frame from victory. Luke Haines kept his nerve for Canton to defeat Steve Wellbeloved and win the match 3-2 leaving it 5-5 on aggregate, with captain Wigmore beating Jacob Boyle in a closely-fought playoff frame to continue their defence of the Plate.

They will face Fairwater Cons after they also trailed 3-2 after the first leg against County Cons, but wins for Luke Pitman and Twm Sion Jones versus John Hicks and Martyn Evans respectively gave Fairwater a 4-3 lead. However, a 42 break from Ryan Bowgen against Steve Flanagan kept the Cons in the match, but Terry Garland’s win over Suhayb Din meant the match was 3-1 with Fairwater holding a 5-4 advantage. Dave Earls stepped up and defeated Jason Hewett in the final frame to take the match to a playoff, but Jones won it against Bowgen to edge the match and tie for Fairwater and set up a showdown with Canton Libs.

Canton Warriors won their medal match versus Roath Cons 7-3 on aggregate after a 3-2 away victory added to their 4-1 win in the first leg, but they had to come from behind after a comfortable win for Andrew Champion against Chris Johnson in the first frame. Wins for Simon Takata versus Chris Harding and Jason Veal over Alan Wright put Canton 2-1 ahead, and Dave Richards’ defeat of Rob Reid sealed the win before Lee Cornock won the final frame of the night against Andy Holman.
