Fairwater Cons and Mackintosh Snooker will meet in the League Cup final after both edged very close semi-finals against Canton Warriors and Macky Misfits respectively.
The Fairwater v Warriors match started with a tremendous frame between Luke Pitman and Chris Johnson as Pitman’s early 28 was wiped out by a 29 break from Johnson, but the chance to clinch the frame was thwarted by a missed yellow. However, neither could strike the winning blow until a foul on the black by Johnson gave Fairwater the lead after an entertaining opening frame. A fluent display from Jason Hewett against Jason Veal gave Fairwater a 2-0 lead after an excellent 39 break saw him win the frame comfortably, but a strong performance from Andy Holman in the next versus Shaun O’Connell saw the match go to the two-point doubles frame. Simon Takata and Dave Richards started the decider superbly against Terry Garland and Twm Sion Jones to build a 50-point lead as they controlled the frame from the outset. However, a 17 break from Garland saw Fairwater get back in the frame and Twm Sion Jones looked like he was going to win it with a brilliant clearance but he was denied on the black. After a bout of safety play, Jones had the chance to seal a final spot and he made no mistake to edge an excellent semi-final 3-2.
The other semi-final was also decided on the black in the doubles frame in the Mackintosh derby as Mackintosh Snooker edged it 3-2 to join Fairwater in next week’s final. However, they had to come from 2-0 behind after Satinder Singh beat Eassa Din on the black in the opening frame, before Jacob Boyle won a close frame against Carlos Schiazza to make it 2-0. Captain Mike Nessbert kept the Mack in the match after he defeated Bill Bainton on the colours and take the match to the doubles frame where team-mates Schiazza ana Nathan Dunne teamed up against Richard Duggan and William Eades. A high-scoring frame went to the colours and when Duggan potted the pink with the rest, he had the opportunity to win it for the Misfits on the black but it jawed and the white dropped agonisingly into the middle pocket to give the Mack the win.
The postponed Malcolm Keenor Trophy semi-final was another closely-fought contest as Caerphilly A beat Rumney British Legion in a playoff frame to edge the tie 6-5. Caerphilly needed to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg and then made a very strong start as a 46 break from Khurram Khan saw him beat Ben Harding, before a win for Ben Griffiths over Glyn Hayes gave them a 4-3 overall lead. A 40 break from Allan Morgan made it 3-0 on the night and one frame from victory, but a pink ball win for Ethan Chichester took the match to the final frame. Another very tight contest ensued between Paul Chichester and Nural Khan which saw Chichester clinch it on the black to take it to a playoff frame with the match tied at 5-5, but Khan kept his nerve to beat Ethan Chichester and seal a final spot against Taff’s Well.
