Qualification for the semi-finals of the Malcolm Keener trophies remains very tight after the third round of matches, and with only one more set of fixtures left in the group stages there are a number of sides in contention.

Fairwater Cons and Fairwater Cons Mack are in control in Group A after registering comfortable wins against Rumney British Legion and Cathays Cons respectively. The individual highlight of the week was Twm Sion Jones’ excellent 70 break which finished off a very good night’s work for his side in defeating Rumney 4-1. Steve Flanagan won the opener against Graeme Prance and Ben Griffiths doubled their lead after he beat Glyn Hayes. Paul Chichester pulled one back after he beat Terry Garland, but Shaun O’Connell made it 3-1 after he defeated Alex Ellis before Albert Columbo’s early lead against Jones was wiped out thanks to his 70 break.

Fairwater Cons Mack’s 5-0 win over Cathays was littered with breaks with Brian Rees, Khurram Khan and Jason Hewett all registering 35+ breaks to give them a superb win. Khan beat Martin Evans on first and Jason Hewett made it 2-0 after beating Ryan Bowgen. Brian Rees sealed the win thanks to a 39 break against Dave Standee and Alan Hurley’s defeat of Jason Summerhayes made it 4-0 with victory over Jason Summerhayes, with Jacob Boyle completing the whitewash with a win over Darren Gill. Meanwhile, Mackintosh Snooker kept their chance of qualifying for the semi-finals alive with a 5-0 win at home to Beech Tree Hotel.

The race for the top two places in Group B looks tighter after Canton Libs lost their unbeaten record thanks to a 3-2 home defeat to Roath Cons, whilst Savoy beat RBL Warriors by the same margin. Andrew Champion got Roath off to a great start after defeating Tony Chick, before Rory Wigmore levelled the match with victory over Presley Cornock. Luke Haines then put Canton ahead with a win against Lee Cornock, but Alan Wright’s win over Ed Topham gave his side the win as Canton didn’t have a fifth player and so Roath were awarded the frame.

Savoy had to come from behind after Jeff Lane lost the opening frame to Chris Johnson, but Colin Lane restored parity with a win over Mike Watts. A 58 break from Mark Bennett was enough to overcome Simon Takata, but Ben Harding made it 2-2 after he beat Lee Greening, before Geoff Sheppard won the decider against Clive Marsh to give Savoy the victory.
