Rumney British Legion have qualified for the semi-finals of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy after they beat Mackintosh Snooker 5-0 to move above Fairwater Cons into second place in their group thanks to a superior frames difference. Qualification looked unlikely at the start of the evening but wins for Glyn Hayes against Mike Nessbert and Albert Columbo versus Carlos Schiazza gave them the perfect start, before Frank Deriu’s win over Jerry Connors gave them the win. However, they knew the potential importance of the last two frames and Paul Chichester and Tony Parkin’s defeat of Nathan Dunne and Satinder Singh respectively gave them the victory they needed to make the last four.

Their place in the semi-finals came at the expense of Fairwater Cons despite winning 3-2 at Cathays Cons and they had to come from behind after Martyn Evans beat Shaun O’Connell in the opening frame. Steffan Davies quickly restored parity with a comfortable win against Mike Rathkey, but Darren Gill restored his side’s lead after he defeated Ben Griffiths. Steve Flanagan’s win against Ryan Bowgen took the match to a decider which was won by Twm Sion Jones against Dave Earls, but it wasn’t quite enough for Fairwater as they were pipped to a semi-final place by Rumney.

Fairwater Cons Mack have won Group A and with it a home semi-final after a 4-1 win at Beech Tree Hotel, with Alan Hurley getting them off to the perfect start against Dan Bridle, before Khurram Khan doubled their lead with a win over Ciaran Paul. Ronnie Allen sealed their place in the semis with victory over Dai Rideout, but Tony Williams’ win against Jason Hewett pulled one back for Beech Tree, before a 41 break from Brian Rees against Mike Pardoe sealed the win for Ronnie Allen’s side.

Group B was equally close as Taff’s Well gained a surprise spot in the semi-finals after Savoy slipped up at home to Canton Libs. Kevin Brown’s side went into the final round of matches knowing that a 5-0 whitewash was needed to give them any chance of reaching the last four and they were made to work hard at Roath Cons. Rhys Carpenter got them off to a good start with a comfortable win over Kerri Whiting, before Jimmy Llewellyn had to fight back from 35 down against Andrew Champion to win a close second frame. Rob Hayes’ victory against Alan Wright and Kevin Brown’s defeat of Lee Cornock made it 4-0 and it was left to Glyn Jones to win the final frame against Rob Reid with a superb long black and with it a place in the semi-finals.

Canton Libs’ trip to Savoy was a winner-takes-all for top spot in the group and a home semi-final and they got off to a good start as Rory Wigmore beat Jeff Lane, before Ed Topham doubled their lead with a win over Geoff Sheppard. Luke Haines made sure of the win after he beat Lee Greening, but wins for Dave Turn and Colin Lane over James Wigmore and Tony Chick made sure of a close result.
