AGM & Presentation Night

The CDSA 2023-24 AGM and Presentation Night took place on Friday 21st June 7pm at Canton Liberal Club.

AGM OF THE CARDIFF AND DISTRICT SNOOKER LEAGUE

MINUTES (2024)

The roll call was completed. Mackintosh Snooker, Taff’s Well, Fairwater Cons, Fairwater Cons Mack, The Cons, Rumney British Legion, RBL Warriors and Roath Cons were represented. Representation for Canton Libs and Caerphilly Cons was absent.

Kevin Brown delivered his Chair’s Report. Thanks were extended to Canton for hosting, and regret expressed that we had lost a Savoy team that has been a league member for so long this season. The suggestion was that there is hope for new teams to join in the coming season.

The Chair thanked other members of the committee for their work, noting the innovations of Darren Gill, the organisation of venue by Twm Sion Jones and particularly the ten years’ service as Secretary by Jimmy Llewellyn. The role of Glyn Jones in maintaining the website, of which more to follow, was also noted.

The Chair welcomed a new winner and finalist in the Cardiff Open this year, suggested the standard of league play was high, although this year the contest was not close. He noted a great night had by all at the team tournament finals at Taff’s Well, introduced the League Secretary, and closed his speech by noting that an alumnus of the league this year reached the final of the World Snooker championship, voicing congratulations to Jak Jones.

JL delivered the Secretary’s Report and noted the changes next year to the website and the expectation that all matches will have players’ results included.

DG in the Tournament Secretary’s report suggested he felt rule clarifications this season had helped, as fewer problems had arisen, congratulated Nurul Khan on his break-building in the tournaments, and noted that less discretion will be shown this year for extension of deadlines. There were a high level of walkover results in tournaments last year that he is keen to avoid in 2024-2025. There is hope that a pre-season Snooker Shoutout event can be organised after successful running in past seasons.

TSJ delivered the Treasurer’s Report. From a carried over balance of £460, there was £500 in entries this year, of which £423 came from competitions, and £500 sponsorship from Ronnie Allen, whose ongoing contribution was noted and appreciated and it was announced that this sponsorship would continue into next season. The balance carried over to next season is £327.

Regarding the website, JL outlined the updates introduced by GJ. It offers better statistics, links, and should be more user friendly, according to GJ ,having gone live before the AGM, and comments and feedback were invited from members. GJ also raised with the members that we should be grateful to Talking Balls’ Jeff, and that hosting will be funded by the league from now on, rather than provided by Jeff.

Registration of new teams was confirmed from Taff’s Well, Fairwater Cons Mack, Roath Cons, Caerphilly A, Fairwater Cons, Rumney BL, Mack Snooker, Taff’s Well Warriors, County Cons, and Macky Lost Boys (since renamed Macky Misfits.)

Darren Gill and Martyn Evans outlined their proposals to the league. The food & drink issue will be discussed, led by JL, before the season begins, to ensure a continuity and consensus of action. The Dress Code proposal was carried by 6 captains’ votes to 2, for finals only, and will be detailed by the league committee in due course. The Handicap Revision proposal was passed unanimously, as was the use of 1G balls for all finals on a mandatory basis.

Requests for members to join the committee saw Martyn Evans nominated by Ryan Bowgen, approved by the room as a fifth committee member. The remaining officers were elected unopposed to their existing roles.

The evening concluded with a buffet and presentation of awards.
