Breaks

Rhys Carpenter 62 (Taff’s Well)

Rhys Carpenter produced the individual highlight of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy this week with a 62 break to help his side Taff’s Well win their derby 4-1 against the Warriors. Glyn Jones got Taff’s Well off to a very good start with a win against Luke Sheppard, which was followed by Rob Hayes’ victory over Simon Takata which made it 2-0. A fine display of potting from Kevin Brown saw him see off Chris Johnson, before Carpenter’s frame against Dave Richards which saw him break down on 62 with an opportunity for a century break on the table, before Andy Holman won a consolation for the Warriors as he beat Jimmy Llewellyn in the final frame.

However, top of Group A are Caerphilly Cons after they won 3-2 at Canton Libs, but they had to come from behind after Luke Haines beat Steffan Davies in the opening frame. Nural Khan levelled the match after he defeated Tony Chick, before Ian Denton had a walkover against Declan O’Callaghan to make it 2-1. Ronnie Allen’s win over Ben Griffiths restored parity again for Canton, but unfortunately the match was decided by another walkover for Khurram Khan against James Wigmore to give Caerphilly the win.

In Group B, Fairwater lead the way after a hard-fought win against Mack Snooker which was closer than the 4-1 result suggests and they found themselves 1-0 down after Carlos Schiazza beat Dan Bridle in the first frame. Twm Sion Jones made it 1-1 after he clinched his frame on the black against Mike Nessbert, before Steve Flanagan’s win over Eassa Din gave Fairwater the lead. Shaun O’Connell sealed the match after defeating Callum Jones and Luke Pitman’s win over Nathan Dunne made it back-to-back wins for his side in this competition.

There was another close match in the group as County Cons won 3-2 at Roath Cons with Mike Rathkey giving his side the lead against Rob Reid in the opening frame, before Clive Marsh made it 1-1 with his win over Suhayb Din. Dave Standage restored Canton’s lead against Andrew Champion before Dave Earls clinched the win, but Lee Cornock won the final frame for Roath against Darren Gill to reduce the deficit.
