Fairwater Start Defence with a Win

Breaks

Nural Khan 55, 37 (Caerphilly A)

The CDSA League Cup saw a series of very tight matches this week, as the popular format that debuted last season made its return. Four frames consisting of three singles and a doubles worth two points means most matches go the distance but the most comfortable winning margin came at Fairwater Cons as the holders kicked off their defence with a 4-1 win over Macky Misfits. However, they lost the opening frame as an in-form Jacob Boyle won against Twm Sion Jones before Terry Garland levelled the match with a win over Bill Bainton. Luke Pitman made it 2-1 after beating Graeme Prance and a doubles win for Jason Hewett and Shaun O’Connell versus William Eades and Richard Duggan moves Fairwater to the top of the table at this early stage.

Roath Cons won an entertaining match 3-2 at home to Taff’s Well, but had to come from behind after Rhys Carpenter won the opening frame on the colours against Andrew Champion. An excellent finish from Rob Reid saw him beat Justin Jones on the pink before consistent potting from captain Kevin Brown gave his side a 2-1 lead after defeating Chris Harding. The match was to be decided in the final frame as Lee Cornock and Alan Wright faced Jimmy Llewellyn and Glyn Jones, with Llewellyn making a couple of contributions to give Taff’s Well a comfortable lead but the Roath pairing hit back and Lee Cornock clinched the victory with a sensational pink down the side cushion to cap off a very good night for his side.

Canton Warriors beat Rumney British Legion 3-2 and had to come from 2-0 behind as Paul Chichester defeated Dave Richards and Ethan Chichester comfortably won against Nick Davies. Captain Chris Johnson kept the Warriors in the match after his win over Frank Deriu, and an impressive performance from Mike Watts and Simon Takata saw them defeat the Chichesters in a high-quality final frame.

There was another 3-2 result at Mackintosh Snooker as an excellent performance from County Cons saw them get their League Cup campaign off to a very good start. They won all three singles frames as Ryan Bowgen won a close opener against Eassa Din before Dave Earls’ defeat of Mike Nessbert made it 2-0. Darren Gill sealed the win after he beat Nathan Dunne, but Carlo Schiazza and Billy Connors comfortably won the doubles frame against Gill and Dave Standage.

The individual performance of the week came at Caerphilly as breaks of 55 and 37 from Nural Khan saw him win the opening frame against Canton Libs’ Luke Haines, before Khurram Khan doubled their lead with victory over Tony Chick. Steffan Davies beat James Wigmore to make it 3-0 but Canton’s captain teamed up with Chick to win the doubles against Khan and Khan to reduce the deficit and keep everything tight after a very close opening week.
