The League Cup returned this week with four of the top five sides all losing, leaving the table very congested as the group stages reach the halfway point, and with only three points separating all 10 sides, each frame will be crucial in the race for a top-4 semi-final place.
Leading the way is County Cons, who are the only side to have won both matches and with their form in the Malcolm Keenor Trophy, Ryan Bowgen’s side are proving themselves to be the cup specialists this season, and a 3-2 win over Fairwater Cons puts them just ahead on games won at the top of the table. They had to come from behind though as Twm Sion Jones won a close opening frame against Dave Earls, before Bowgen levelled the match with a win over Steve Wellbeloved. Luke Pitman restored Fairwater’s lead after beating Dave Standage, but like most League Cup matches it was decided by the doubles frame with Earls and Suhayb Din defeating Jason Hewett and Shaun O’Connell to give County the win.
However, the result of the week came at Caerphilly as Rumney British Legion won 4-1 to move level on points with County, with Paul Chichester defeating Steffan Davies in the opening singles frame despite Davies registering a 49 break, before Ethan Chichester doubled their lead after his win over Allan Jones. A 35 break from Khurram Khan helped to reduced the deficit after beating Andy McGill, but the Chichesters teamed up to defeat Nural Khan and Ben Griffiths to complete a fantastic night for Rumney.
The biggest win of the week came at the Mackintosh as the Misfits beat Canton Warriors 5-0 to surge up the table into joint-second, with Jacob Boyle beating Jason Veal and William Eades defeating Chris Johnson to give them a 2-0 lead. Steve Wellbeloved’s victory over Geoff Sheppard sealed the win, before Richard Duggan and Eades teamed up to beat Simon Takata and Mike Watts to complete an excellent night’s work for the Misfits.
The individual performance of the week came at Mackintosh Snooker as an excellent 70 break from Tony Storer against Carlo Schiazza gave Roath a consolation point, but wins for Eassa Din and Billy Connors versus Chris Harding and Lee Cornock respectively gave the Mack a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame, which Mike Nessbert and Nathan Dunne comfortably won against Alan Wright and Rob Reid to move them into a share of second place.
Canton Libs moved into mid-table after a 3-2 away victory at Taff’s Well thanks to wins in all three singles frames. Luke Haines won the opener versus Glyn Jones after being 30 down early on, before a 32 break from James Wigmore saw him defeat Kevin Brown to make it 2-0. A close frame between Rob Hayes and Ronnie Allen was decided on the pink to seal the win for Canton but Brown and Jones paired up to beat Wigmore and Tony Chick to give Taff’s Well a crucial two points.
