Caerphilly Continue Defence of Malcolm Keenor Trophy

Breaks

Nural Khan 52 (Caerphilly A)
Jimmy Llewellyn 39 (Taff’s Well)

The line-up for the 2025-26 Malcolm Keenor Trophy and CDSA Plate was confirmed this week as reigning champions Caerphilly A qualified as Group A winners after they beat Fairwater Cons 3-2 to set up a semi-final against Group B runners-up Rumney British Legion. A 52 break from Nural Khan saw him win the opening frame against Terry Garland and Steffan Davies doubled their lead with a win on the black versus Steve Flanagan. Twm Sion Jones pulled one back after beating Ian Denton but Ben Griffiths’ win over Dan Bridle sealed the victory, before Jason Hewett’s consolation defeat of Dave Hartnell in the final frame clinched 4th place and a CDSA Plate spot.

Taff’s Well qualify as runners-up after a 4-1 win at Canton Warriors along with Fairwater’s defeat saw them overhaul Macky Misfits who finish third in the group. Glyn Jones got them off to a good start after he defeated Chris Johnson on the pink, before a tremendous positional shot from pink to black saw Rob Hayes edge past Jason Veal to make it 2-0. The third frame was also a close affair as Rhys Carpenter overcame the handicap lead to beat Simon Takata on the pink, and Kevin Brown’s close defeat of Mike Watts made it 4-0, meaning the Warriors finished bottom of the table. The last frame was the most entertaining of the night as an early 26 break from Geoff Sheppard helped open up a big lead over Jimmy Llewellyn, but a 39 break took the frame to the colours, but Sheppard took his chance to finish the frame on the pink and give his side a consolation point.

The top two in Group B had already been decided ahead of the final week’s fixtures but a resounding 4-1 win for Mackintosh at Rumney saw them win the group and set up a semi-final against Taff’s Well for the third season in a row. Carlo Schiazza’s close win against Andy McGill and Jerry Connors’ defeat of Paul Chichester gave the Mack a 2-0 lead, but Ben Harding reduced the deficit after beating Eassa Din. Nathan Dunne’s comfortable victory over Albert Columbo made it 3-1 and Mike Nessbert finished things off for his side with a high-scoring win against Ethan Chichester.

Canton Libs sealed a Plate spot alongside County Cons after they defeated Roath Cons 3-2 in a close match, but they had to come from 2-0 behind after Andrew Champion’s win against Tony Chick in the opening frame was followed by Lee Cornock’s victory over Luke Haines. Ed Topham pulled one back after beating Joe Browse on the colours, before Ronnie Allen’s comfortable defeat of Rob Reid drew Canton level, and the decider was a very tight contest with Rory Wigmore sealing the win on the black against Kerri Whiting.
