Colin Harding 40 (Market Street A)
County Cons produced the result of the opening round of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy as they defeated reigning champions Caerphilly A, but had to come from behind as a 53 break from Nural Khan saw him beat Dave Standage before Khurram Khan doubled Caerphilly’s lead following his win over Ryan Bowgen. Suhayb Din started the comeback as he defeated Ben Griffiths in a high-scoring frame, before wins for Satinder Singh and Darren Gill against Allan Jones and David Hartnell respectively sealed a great night for County.
Mackintosh Snooker got off to the perfect start in the Malcolm Keenor Trophy with a 5-0 derby win over Macky Cuesaders as wins for Carlos Schiazza versus Steve McDonnell and Nathan Dunne against Rob Baker gave them a 2-0 lead. Mike Nessbert sealed the win after beating Logan Rawlings before Brian Rees defeated Jacob Boyle, and the whitewash was completed by Eassa Din after a comfortable victory over Clive Marsh.
Last year’s runners-up Taff’s Well won a closely-fought marathon 3-2 at Fairwater Cons, but found themselves 2-0 behind as Dan Bridle beat Rhys Carpenter in the opening frame before Luke Pitman’s win over Jimmy Llewellyn put them 2-0 up. A solid performance from Kevin Brown pulled one back as he defeated Shaun O’Connell and Glyn Jones levelled the match after beating Terry Garland, before a nerveless pink into the green pocket from Justin Jones completed the win against Steve Flanaghan.
The close matches continued as Cathays Sports also won in a deciding frame after twice being behind at Macky Misfits. Graeme Prance’s good start to the season saw him win the opener against Alan Wright before Lee Cornock made it 1-1 after defeating Renato Ridolini. William Eades’ win versus Chris Harding put the Misfits back ahead, before Joe Browse restored parity after beating Richard Duggan and the victory was sealed by Andrew Champion as he won the final frame against Steve Wellbeloved.
Canton Libs had a great start to the competition as they won 3-2 at Rumney British Legion with only four players. Ian Denton has also begun the season strongly and he defeated Andy McGill in the opening frame. Jeremy Charles made it 2-0 after beating Carl Galloway, but Paul Chichester reduced the deficit after beating Tony Chick and with a walkover for Glyn Hayes the match went to a decider which was won by James Wigmore as he produced a captain’s performance to comfortably beat Ben Harding.
Canton Warriors were the fifth team to win by the odd frame as they beat Market Street A, with Dave Richards winning the opening frame against Graham Wood. Chris Johnson made it 2-0 as beat Adrian Webber, but Craig Hellinger kept his side in the match with victory over Jason Veal. A 40 break from Colin Harding against Simon Takata saw the match go to a decider but Luke Sheppard won it for Canton as he beat Alan Cook on the black.
