One of the most competitive seasons in recent memory continues to intrigue as just one point separates the top five sides after six matches in the Premier League. Among them are last year’s runners-up as Fairwater Cons made it four wins in a row with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Macky Misfits. Twm Sion Jones started the match with a bang as a 60 break saw him defeat Steve Wellbeloved, but Renato Ridolini hit back for the Misfits with a comfortable win against Luke Pitman. Jason Hewett is one of only three players with a perfect league record so far this season and he too made a 60 break as he beat William Eades to put Fairwater 2-1 ahead, before Shaun O’Connell defeated Bill Bainton on the colours to seal the win, but Richard Duggan’s victory over Steve Flanaghan pulled one back for his side.
Market Street A have moved level with league leaders Taff’s Well as they defeated Rumney British Legion 4-1, with Adrian Webber winning the opener against Paul Chichester, before Mauro Zeraschi doubled their lead after he beat Carl Galloway. Ethan Chichester reduced the deficit after defeating Paul Stuart Torrie, but unbeaten Craig Hellinger won again as he beat Glyn Hayes and Colin Harding’s very good form continues as he won the final frame versus Andy McGill.
Taff’s Well have an identical record with Market Street after a 3-2 home win over Cathays Sports, but they had to come from behind twice as good potting from Tony Storer saw him win the opening frame against Tom Cross. A dominant display from Justin Jones drew Taff’s Well level as he defeated Chris Harding, before a fine 45 break from James Facey restored Cathays’ lead after beating Glyn Jones. Jimmy Llewellyn made it 2-2 after his win over Andrew Champion and captain Kevin Brown stepped up to win the decider against Lee Cornock which featured a well-constructed 38 break to give his side the victory, and maintain his unbeaten start to the season.
Champions Caerphilly A have quietly closed the gap on the teams above them as they move into contention following a 5-0 win at Canton Libs, but it was a case of what if for the Libs as several frames went to the final colours. Rob McKenna won the opener on the pink against Kieran Madden, before Nural Khan made it 2-0 on the black versus Rory Wigmore. Steffan Davies won the third frame comfortably against Jez Charles, before Khurram Khan defeated James Wigmore on the colours, before the match was capped off by an entertaining final frame full of fouls, misses and free balls as Tony Chick lost on the black to Dave Hartnell to give Caerphilly the whitewash.
Macky Cuesaders are level in joint-third with last year’s top two as they won a close derby match 3-2 against Mackintosh Snooker, who found themselves ahead early on as Eassa Din beat Rob Baker. Brian Rees made it 2-0 as he won the next against Jacob Boyle, but Logan Rawlings’s win over Carlo Schiazza pulled one back for the Cuesaders. Ronnie Allen defeated Mike Nessbert in the fourth frame to take the match to a decider, and the comeback was complete as Clive Marsh won a high-scoring frame against Nathan Dunne to continue their excellent start to the season.
County Cons made it three league wins in a row as they won 4-1 at Canton Warriors, with Darren Gill and Simon Takata contesting an entertaining first frame that was decided by a fluked black from Gill to give County the lead. A 28 break from Chris Johnson saw him build a strong lead in the next frame over Ryan Bowgen, before excellent potting and a 26 break reduced the gap. The turning point of the frame came when Bowgen laid a very good snooker and after a few misses from Johnson, the frame was sealed with a 27 clearance. Gary Prosser’s 100% league record remains intact as he beat Jason Veal on the colours to make it 3-0, but a very good display from Dave Richards saw him pull a frame back after defeating Suhayb Din, before the win was sealed by Satinder Singh as he won the final frame versus Andy Holman on the colours.
