The 2023-24 season has begun with some very close matches to illustrate the competitiveness of the league, as champions Fairwater Cons Mack were made to work hard for their 3-2 at home to RBL Warriors, with Brian Rees winning the opener against Chris Johnson, before Geoff Sheppard levelled against Alan Hurley. Jason Hewett’s win over Dave Richards put them 2-1 up, but Nural Khan made it 2-2 with a 41 break against Ronnie Allen to send the match to a decider, with Khurram Kham beating Jason Veal thanks to a 46 break to clinch the win.

Last year’s runners-up Fairwater Cons had an equally tough match at Rumney British Legion, with Twm Sion Jones winning a close first frame on the black against Albert Columbo. Paul Chichester then levelled the match, securing the impressive feat of two breaks of 41 to defeat Terry Garland, before Rumney went 2-1 ahead after Shaun O’Connell’s in-off on the black against Glyn Hayes. Another close frame in the fourth resulted in Ben Griffiths potting pink and black to beat Andy Magill, and captain Steffan Davies sealed the win on the pink against Alex Ellis to give his side the closely-fought victory.

The result of the week came at Canton Libs as they whitewashed Savoy 5-0 to set down a marker for the season ahead, with a 58 break from Ed Topham enough to beat Mark Bennett, before Rory Wigmore won a close frame against Colin Lane to make it 2-0. The highest break of the week came in the next as Luke Haines’ 60 defeated Jeff Lane and James Facey’s win over Alex Lane was followed by a walkover win for James Wigmore against Lee Greening.

The closest match of the week came at County Conservative Club, as newly-named The Cons won a very tight encounter 3-2 against Taff’s Well, with all three of their wins coming on the black. Ryan Bowgen won the opener against Rhys Carpenter after recovering from being angled on the final black, before the longest frame of the night saw Jason Summerhayes produce an excellent clearance on the colours to beat Jimmy Llewellyn. Ian Purnell pulled one back after he defeated Dave Standage, before Dave Earls won another close frame on the black against Glyn Jones to seal the win, before Rob Hayes comfortably won a consolation frame for the visitors. The other match of the night resulted in a walkover 5-0 win for Mackintosh Snooker over Beech Tree Hotel who are deducted 6 points for failing to fulfil the fixture.
