Taff’s Well produced the first surprise of the season as they defeated champions Fairwater Cons Mack 3-2 in another week of close matches in the CDSA.

The first frame saw captain Kevin Brown take on Brian Rees and a close frame went to the colours, with Rees potting the pink to take the opener. Taff’s Well hit back in the next with Rhys Carpenter potting an outstanding pink to land perfectly on the black to beat Alan Hurley, before Jason Hewett restored the champions’ lead with a close win on the colours against Ian Purnell. Khurram Khan made a fast start in his frame versus Jimmy Llewellyn to go 40 points ahead, but a couple of decent contributions got Llewellyn back in it going into the colours. Khan potted the yellow to move 21 ahead but left the green over the middle pocket, and Llewellyn made the most of the chance to clear the table and take the match to a decider. After four close, tense frames most people were expecting the final frame to be the same, but great potting and tremendous close control saw Rob Hayes make a 76 break against Ronnie Allen to win the match for Taff’s Well, but he may have felt a century was available after a missed red with 59 points still remaining.

Canton Libs moved to the top of the table after an excellent 3-2 win away at last season’s runners-up Fairwater Cons. James Facey made a strong start against Twm Sion Jones to win the opening frame, before a 46 break from Declan O’Callaghan made it 2-0 against new recruit Sam Thomas. Terry Garland pulled one back after he beat new signing Grant Coombs on the colours, but a 32 break from Ed Topham sealed the win after he defeated Shaun O’Connell. Steffan Davies won a consolation frame for his side, but he was made to work hard versus Tony Chick, eventually winning on the pink.

In a week of 3-2 results, the Rumney derby was another competitive match with Ben Harding beating Simon Takata in the first frame of the night. Andy Magill then levelled the match with victory over Graeme Prance, before Jason Veal put the Warriors ahead after beating Alex Ellis. Nural Khan’s win over Paul Chichester sealed the match, but Tony Parkin won a consolation for Rumney against Mike Watts.

Roath Cons had a walkover after Savoy couldn’t fulfil the fixture, but the other result of the week saw Beech Tree Hotel defeat The Cons at home 3-2. Dan Bridle got his side off to the perfect start with a win against Jason Summerhayes, before Dan Wardle made it 1-1 after he beat Dai Berkinshaw. Dave Standage won a low-scoring frame against Ben Bridle, before Mike Pardoe levelled the match with victory over Mike Rathkey, and Ciaran Paul won the decider against Martyn Evans to give Beech Tree their first win of the campaign.
