Three-Way Title Race Underway

Breaks

Nural Khan 68 (Caerphilly A)
Allan Morgan 37 (Caerphilly A)

The race for the Premier League title is looking like a three-way battle as only two points separate Fairwater Cons, Caerphilly A and Taff’s Well at the top of the table. With Fairwater playing in the League Cup, both Caerphilly A and Taff’s Well knew they needed to close the gap and take advantage of their game-in-hand and they did so as both managed to win their matches 4-1.

Caerphilly A maintained their 100% record as they won 4-1 at County Cons with Allan Morgan’s 37 break enough to defeat Mike Rathkey in the opening frame. Rob McKenna doubled their lead as he beat Dave Standage, before Nural Khan registered the highest league break of the season with a 68 in his win over Dan Wardle. Ben Griffiths remains unbeaten as he beat Dave Earls to make it 4-0, before Ryan Bowgen won a consolation frame for County against Steffan Davies.

Taff’s Well matched that result at home to Mackintosh Snooker as Ian Purnell won the first frame against Eassa Din, but Carlos Schiazza levelled things as he beat Jimmy Llewellyn. Glyn Jones restored Taff’s Well’s lead as he defeated Mike Nessbert, and Rob Hayes won a scrappy frame against Callum Jones to make it 3-1 before a fluent display from Kevin Brown which featured a 34 break, saw him beat Billy Connors and keep his side in touch with the leaders.

Macky Misfits moved up to fifth place in the table as they won 3-2 at home to Taff’s Well Warriors, with Jacob Boyle and Graeme Prance winning the opening frames against Mike Watts and Simon Takata respectively. Boyle took advantage of a miss on the yellow by Watts to clear to the pink and Prance won a close frame against Takata. Satinder Singh started the next strongly for the Misfits with a 34 break, but a snooker on the pink gave Johnson the chance to win and he cleared to pull one back for his side. The next frame was a tense one which went to the colours before Steve Wellbeloved clinched the win as he beat Dave Richards on the black, but Geoff Sheppard won the final frame for the Warriors versus Bill Bainton to reduce the deficit.

Roath Cons are one of the most-improved sides in the league and they registered another win as they defeated Rumney British Legion 3-2 to move just behind their opponent in mid-table. However, it was Rumney who started strongest with Paul Chichester beating Rob Baker and this was followed up by Ethan Chichester who made it 2-0 after beating Phil Storer. Clive Marsh started the comeback as he beat Frank Deriu and Andrew Champion levelled the match with a win over Ben Harding, before Lee Cornock won the decider against Tony Parkin to complete a fine fightback for his side.

There was an entertaining League Cup match this week at Canton Libs as they beat Fairwater Cons 3-2 with Luke Haines defeating Dan Bridle in the opening frame. Terry Garland’s win over Ronnie Allen drew his side level, before Luke Pitman beat James Wigmore to move 2-1 ahead. The match rested on the outcome of the pairs match between James and Rory Wigmore who were facing Shaun O’Connell and Jason Hewett, with the Canton pairing sealing the victory after they ran out winners.
