CDSA Plate Final
Canton Libs 3 v 2 Macky Misfits
Canton Libs are the 2024-25 CDSA Plate winners after an absorbing and tense final against Macky Misfits at Taff’s Well Ex-Serviceman’s Club. A captain’s performance from James Wigmore against Martin Paterson got them off to a great start with runs of 25, 22 and 17 leaving Paterson needing a snooker on the last red, but Wigmore finished the frame on the colours.
A very scrappy opening to Ed Topham and Graeme Prance’s frame resulted in a re-rack, with the second frame a much more fluent affair although neither player could gain the upper hand. As the frame entered the final stages it was still very close which resulted in a respotted black, with Topham rolling in an excellent mid-range pot with the white near the cushion to put Canton 2-0 ahead.
Two of the CDSA’s legends faced off in frame three as Steve Wellbeloved knew he had to win to keep the match alive against Ronnie Allen, who was in control for most of the frame as it neared the colours. A miss on the yellow from Allen gave Wellbeloved a chance though and he capitalised with a superb clearance to pull one back for the Misfits. The Misfits now had the momentum and it quickly became 2-2 as fluent potting from Jacob Boyle won him his frame versus Tony Chick to take the final to a decider.
The deciding frame was between Luke Haines of Canton and Macky’s Renato Ridolini, with Haines managing to capitalise on the chances he had and a display of good long potting and solid matchplay gave him the win, and the victory 3-2 for Canton Libs to secure the CDSA Plate title.
