Breaks
Allan Morgan 62 (Caerphilly A)
Jason Hewett 47 (Fairwater Cons)
Canton Warriors caused the first upset of the league season as they defeated champions Fairwater Cons 3-2, but they had to come from behind as a 47 break from Jason Hewett was enough to beat Chris Johnson in the opening frame. Simon Takata levelled the match after his win over Dan Bridle, but Luke Pitman’s comfortable win versus Andy Holman restored Fairwater’s lead. Canton again drew level after Brian Rees’s defeat of Shaun O’Connell, but Jason Veal won the decider against Steve Flanagan to maintain the Warriors unbeaten start to the season.
The league leaders at this early stage are Caerphilly A as they recorded back-to-back 4-1 wins with a very good performance at home to Mackintosh Snooker. Cardiff Open champion Allan Morgan started the match with a bang as he recorded a 62 break to beat Jerry Connors, before Billy Connors hit back to level the match with a fine win against Nural Khan. Khurram Khan beat Carlos Schiazza to restore Caerphilly’s lead before Steffan Davies won the fourth frame for Caerphilly on the colours against Eassa Din, before captain Ben Griffiths capped things off with victory over Mike Nessbert.
Macky Misfits are the other side who maintained their 100% record this week with a closely-fought 3-2 win over County Cons. Jacob Boyle won a close opener versus Ryan Bowgen and Satinder Singh won a high-scoring second frame against John Hicks to give his side a 2-0 lead. William Eades won his debut CDSA frame against Suhayb Din to seal the match, before Martyn Evans pulled one back following his defeat of Bill Bainton, and Nick Bevan gave the scoreline a more positive look for County as he won a close frame against Renato Ridolini.
Taff’s Well bounced back from their defeat in the first week at the hands of Caerphilly, with a 4-1 win away to Roath Cons, but it was Lee Cornock’s side who made the better start as Andrew Champion beat Rhys Carpenter in the opening frame. Rob Reid managed to overcome an early deficit against Jimmy Llewellyn to take the frame to the black, but a long pot from Llewellyn pinched it to level the match, before Glyn Jones won the next against Kerri-Lee Whiting to give Taff’s Well the lead. Kevin Brown sealed the win for his side after beating Matthew Reid and the frame of the night saw Lee Cornock lose a quality contest against Rob Hayes to complete a good night’s work for Taff’s Well.
Canton Libs got their season up-and-running with victory over Rumney British Legion, despite only having four players available for the match, and wins for Rory Wigmore versus Glyn Hayes and Luke Haines against Paul Chichester gave them the perfect start, before Ethan Chichester reduced the deficit with a win over James Wigmore. The fourth frame was effectively a decider and Tony Chick managed to overcome Frank Deriu on the colours to give Canton the win, with Tony Parkin getting a walkover for Rumney in the final frame.
