Cathays Sports made it back-to-back wins in the opening two group matches of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy after beating Taff’s Well 3-2 to move into second place in Group B. Andrew Champion got them off to a very good start after beating Rob Hayes in a close opening frame, but Rhys Carpenter’s comfortable win over James Facey drew Taff’s Well level. A very good potting display from Alan Wright saw him defeat Jimmy Llewellyn to move Cathays ahead, before Joe Browse potted blue and pink to beat Glyn Jones to make it 3-1. An entertaining final frame saw Lee Cornock make a fluent 32 break early on against Justin Jones, before very good potting and solid matchplay from Jones took it to the colours, and following an excellent snooker on the pink, he sank it to reduce the deficit and finish off a closely-fought match.
However, Cathays find themselves behind group leaders County Cons who maintained their 100% start with a 4-1 win over Macky Misfits. A high-scoring opening frame saw Ryan Bowgen beat Renato Ridolini on the colours, before Satinder Singh doubled their lead following his win against Graeme Prance. Darren Gill’s close defeat of Richard Duggan and a comfortable win for Suhayb Din versus John Moore made it 4-0, but William Eades won a consolation point against Gary Prosser in the final frame.
Mackintosh Snooker are comfortably top of Group A after beating Rumney British Legion 4-1, with wins in the first two frames for Eassa Din and Carlo Schiazza against Carl Galloway and Glyn Hayes respectively. Nathan Dunne’s win on the colours versus Andy McGill was followed by Brian Rees beating Paul Chichester to make it 4-0, but Ethan Chichester won a high-scoring final frame against Mackintosh captain Mike Nessbert to win a consolation point for Rumney.
Market Street A registered their first win of the competition to move into second place behind Mackintosh after a 5-0 victory over Canton Libs. Colin Harding beat Ian Denton in the opener before Adrian Webber made it 2-0 after defeating Rory Wigmore on the colours. Craig Hellinger edged the next on the black against James Wigmore to seal the win, before victories for Alan Cook against Jez Charles and Richard Webb over Tony Chick completed the whitewash for Market Street.
Macky Cuesaders are third in Group A after a 4-1 win at home to Canton Warriors, with Logan Rawlings winning a close opening frame against Nick Davies. Simon Takata drew the Warriors level after defeating Jacob Boyle, but Ronnie Allen restored the Cuesaders’ lead following his win over Andy Holman. A 44 break from Rob Baker continued his fine individual form as he beat Dave Richards and Clive Marsh completed the victory after he defeated Chris Johnson in the final frame.
Caerphilly A and Fairwater Cons had both lost their opening matches so knew they needed a win to get them back into contention for a semi-final place, but it was the reigning champions who did so to move into third place in Group B. The highest break of the week came in the opening frame as Khurram Khan registered a 48 to comfortably beat Jason Hewett, before Steffan Davies doubled their lead after his close win over Shaun O’Connell. Nural Khan sealed the win after beating Steve Flanaghan on the colours, before a 37 break from Twm Sion Jones against Brandon Leadbetter pulled one back for Fairwater, but Caerphilly captain Ben Griffiths completed an excellent win for his side after defeating Dan Bridle.
