2013-14 Mid-Season Review

As the Cardiff & District Snooker League season breaks for Christmas, two teams have shone with undefeated performances and six point leads at the top of the tables going into 2014.
The Premier Division title has in the past been so close but yet so far for County Cons but this season’s seven wins out of seven matches has surely made them favourites to become champions and lead the division with 33 points. Defending champions Savoy are currently in second place after recovering from the worst start possible, a 5-0 home loss to County in Week 1, with Penarth Road B in third place with 24 points.
The other team at 100% are Division One newcomers Cuesaders. The Llandaff Institute side’s place at the summit might not come as a surprise to some after their players were loaned out at the end of last season to Cathays Cons who then went on a seven game unbeaten run. At the top with 41 points, courtesy of eight wins out of eight and only dropping seven frames from 40 played, Cuesaders’ nearest challengers are Park Club at only 6 points behind. The City Road team have only lost to the current league leaders so far, back in week 2, and after losing out on the Division One Cup in a deciding frame to Cathays Cons, they have vowed to give their best efforts to win the league. Senghenydd round out the top three at 32 points and a record of six wins from eight.
The player rankings for both divisions could be won bye a number of contenders. Premier Division sees four players sharing the top spot with six from seven while Shane Virgin is alone in 1st place with seven from seven in Division One. The Wellington Rileys player is followed closely by four others at seven from eight. For the High Break in the League so far, there is familiar name at the top of the Premier Division. Mark Bennett’s 100 in Week 6 has him clear of Jason Hewitt who scored a 92 from Week 2, his first frame of the season. Division One is led by Park Club’s Chris Richards with a 57 he scored in Week 9. So far a total 42 breaks of 30+ have been made by 29 players across both divisions.
As the League takes its Christmas leave, Singles and Doubles competitions have now started. The league returns with Division One’s match Week 10 on 16th January 2014.
The CDSA would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
