County reeling after 4-1 defeat opens up the title race for Fairwater, Mack and Trecenydd

It might be that this week in the Tuesday League saw County turn a positive position into another valiant failure. They knew they needed at least one win from their final two games, but it didn’t come at the Mack, a venue that rarely smiles upon them. John Moore produced the highest break of the game, Tom Cross dropped back in the rankings, and Mack may have just given themselves a chance to slide into top spot with a win over Fairwater in the final match of the season.

That is likely to be the decisive match, but will happen simultaneously with Trec’s match with Potters Bar, and Trec will know that a win over County next week will make them strong favourites to rise above the Cons side in the final standings. If County win that, then Trec cannot pass them, and that will make the task easier for Fairwater and Mack.

Lots of possible permutations, but elsewhere last night, Penarth Road beat Potters Bar with some comfort, and the Legion were reminded that they still drop the odd frame in 5 too often to have caught the teams at the top – Savoy came out on top in what sounded like a good game, with Neil Tomkins breaking the half century again. University chose to field their strongest players first, and yet still took two frames off Fairwater having gone two down, which is a fine rearguard effort.

In the rankings defeat for Spence at the hands of Kevin Brown (again) and Tom meant that Mark Bennett’s 8th win on the bounce moved him to the top of the rankings, although all three are level on 17 wins. John Moore completed the first 10 game winning streak of the season to keep his 5th position.
