Final week Division One report – congratulations Canton Libs ‘Z’

Congratulations to Canton Libs Z for timing their run to the line perfectly to snatch the Division One title away from Senghenydd on a dramatic night of action. Going into the final round of games, there were 3 sides with a mathematical chance of winning the league but realistically it was between Senghenydd and the winners of the Canton Libs Z v Taffs Well match. All Senghenydd needed to do was better the result from the other match or even better, a 5 – 0 scoreline would have been enough.

After 2 frames the title was looking to be in the hands of Senghenydd as they held a 2 -0 lead against Wellington Rileys and Canton Libs Z v Taffs Well was standing at 1 – 1. After frame 3 it was rather in the balance with Senghenydd now 2 – 1 up and Canton Libs Z were also 2 – 1 up. After frame 4 the momentum had swung towards Canton Libs Z as they had won the match 3 – 1 and the Senghenydd match was now 2 – 2. Senghenydd needed to win the last frame and hoped that Canton Libs Z lost their last frame to win the title, otherwise it would be the boys from Canton’s season. If both teams won then Canton Libs Z would also win the title. Captain Bill Bainton secured the title for Canton with a final frame win, and soon after it was confirmed that Tony Palkowski had lost for Sengenydd, so Canton Libs Z won the title by 2 pts over Senghenydd.

Elsewhere Cathays Cons beat Canton Libs B comfortably 4 – 1 including a 47 break from Rob Baker which wasn’t quite enough to win the high break prize which was held by Mike Boucher of Senghenydd of 52. The solitary Canton Libs B frame was won by James Wigmore who beat the impressive Dave Standage who lost for only the second time this season. Trec Wanderers were given the match against Kiss Shot as they couldn’t field a team, but that wasn’t enough to lift them off the bottom, however there has been much improvement with the team this year and hoping that this will continue for next season.
