The race for the Premier League title is very close with only two points separating the top three sides at the halfway stage. Last season’s runners-up Mackintosh Sports are in pole position after they added to a 3-2 win against Canton Libs in a rearranged game this week to beat Rumney British Legion by the same scoreline. However, they were made to work hard after winning the opener with Jason Hewett registering a 56 break to beat Frank Deriu, and Alan Hurley following that up with victory over Albert Columbo. Glyn Hayes pulled one back with a win over Clive Marsh and Ben Harding levelled things up by beating Khurram Khan to take it to a decider. However, Mackintosh’s in-form captain Ronnie Allen continued his fine individual season by beating Tony Parkin to keep their noses in front at the top.
With champions Fairwater sitting out this week with a bye, Canton Libs took the chance to close the gap with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Cathays Cons. After losing their unbeaten record in the 3-2 rearranged loss to Mackintosh, Canton got back to winning ways but they had to dig deep to secure the win. Ed Topham got them off to a good start with a high-scoring win over Johnny Davies, before Dave Standage made it 1-1 with a win on the colours over James Facey. Darren Gill then turned the match on its head with victory over Luke Haines to put the pressure on Canton, but some excellent matchplay from Rory Wigmore against Martyn Evans took the game to a deciding frame. Knowing only a win was enough to keep their title challenge on-track, some good potting from captain James Wigmore gave them the victory over Dave Earls to make it 3-2.
The competitiveness of the league was illustrated by all five matches finishing 3-2 and another deciding frame was needed at Trecenydd Snooker as they beat Mackintosh Snooker. With the league splitting into two divisions at this halfway stage of the season, Chris Garwood’s side sealed their place in the Premier League but had to come from behind to do so. Dan Bridle comfortably won the opener against Trevor Connors, before wins for Craig Bolton over Carl Dimond and Mike Nessbert against David Birkenshaw saw Mackintosh take a 2-1 lead. Mike Pardoe continued his good form with a win over Nathan Dunne to take the match all the way and David Rideout gave them the win after a close frame against Satinder Singh.
RBL Warriors gained a good win over Cuesaders Z with Chris Johnson winning the battle of the captains against Graeme Prance, before Paul Chichester beat Jason Veal to make it 1-1. Nick Davis restored RBL’s lead with victory in the next and Mike Watts sealed the win after he beat Bill Bainton to make it 3-1, with Mike Kinman pulling one back for Cuesaders after defeating Syed Moshin Kazmi.
Mark Bennett showed why he is a class act in winning the opening frame for Savoy to help his side to a 3-2 victory over Taff’s Well. He won the battle of the ex-professionals after he registered breaks of 48 and 44 to defeat Nick Jones, but Tom Cross made it 1-1 with a win over Ryan Rowlands. Jason Summerhayes made it 2-1 after beating Glyn Jones, before a brilliant pink from Colin Lane, albeit after a fluked blue, against Kevin Brown gave his side the win, before Rob Hayes won the last against Geoff Sheppard to round off a very competitive week of snooker in the CDSA.
