Brian Rees 60 (Fairwater Cons Mack)

Reigning Malcolm Keenor Trophy winners Fairwater Cons Mack have laid down a marker for this year’s competition with a 5-0 win over Mackintosh Snooker in the first round of the group stages, with a 60 break from Brian Rees being the individual highlight of the week.

The other two matches in Group A were closer affairs with 3-2 wins for Cathays Cons against Rumney British Legion and Fairwater Cons versus Beech Tree Hotel. Dan Jones won the opener for Cathays against Graeme Prance, before Dave Standage made it 2-0 after he defeated Ben Harding and Jason Summerhayes made sure of the win in beating Albert Columbo. However, Rumney won the final two frames of the evening with Paul Chichester and Andy Magill winning against Martyn Evans and Mike Rathkey respectively.

Fairwater Cons had to come from behind against Beech Tree Hotel in their 3-2 win after Dan Bridle inflicted a rare defeat on Ben Griffiths, but Shaun O’Connell levelled the match with a close victory over Mike Pardoe. Terry Garland then won comfortably against Craig Fletcher to make it 2-1, before Chris Garwood restored parity after he beat Twm Sion Jones. Steffan Davies started the decider well for Fairwater before Dai Rideout took the frame to the colours, but a great long yellow was enough for Davies to seal the frame and match.

Taff’s Well made a good start to the competition in Group B with a 4-1 win away to RBL Warriors to put them top at this early stage. Rhys Carpenter won the opening frame against Jason Veal, but Dave Richards soon levelled things at 1-1 with a win over Glyn Jones. Jimmy Llewellyn restored the lead for Taff’s Well with a missed black on 33 being enough to win the frame against Chris Johnson on the colours, before wins for Tom Cross on the black against Sid Kazmi and Kevin Brown over Mike Watts sealed the victory.

Savoy beat Roath Cons 3-2 in the other match in Group B but found themselves 1-0 down after Phil Storer beat Mark Bennett. Lee Greening’s win over Alan White made it 1-1 before Geoff Sheppard put Savoy ahead after he defeated Andrew Champion. Lee Cornock then ensured there’d be another deciding frame with a win over Jeff Lane, but Colin Lane won it against Presley Cornock to give his side the win.
