Taff’s Well & Caerphilly Qualify for Semis

Breaks

Andy McGill 41 (Rumney British Legion)
Jacob Boyle 37 (Macky Misfits)

The top two spots in Group A of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy are decided after a 4-1 win for Taff’s Well at home to Rumney British Legion saw them move level with Caerphilly A, meaning both sides qualify for the semi-finals. Rob Hayes won an entertaining opening frame on the black for Taff’s Well against Ethan Chichester before a 33 break for Jimmy Llewellyn saw him double their lead after victory over Tony Parkin. Ben Harding looked like pulling one back against Ian Purnell after opening up an early 40-point lead, but after reducing the deficit heading into the colours, an outstanding positional shot from pink to black gave him the opportunity to seal the frame and make it 3-0. The next was a battle between two of the form players in the league as Kevin Brown beat Paul Chichester on the colours, but Andy McGill produced the individual highlight of the night after breaking down on 41 following six reds and five blacks when a bigger break looked likely, to win a consolation frame for his side.

Canton Libs have given themselves a chance of a Plate semi-final spot after they defeated Taff’s Well Warriors in a very close match, with four frames being decided on the black. Luke Haines won the opening frame against Jason Veal before Dave Richards levelled the match with a win over James Wigmore. Declan O’Callaghan restored Canton’s lead after defeating Andy Holman, before Chris Johnson beat Ronnie Allen to make it 2-2 and continue the extraordinary sequence of final ball finishes in the match. However, Canton won the decider after Tony Chick comfortably beat Luke Sheppard, to give his side a four-point gap over the Warriors with one match to play.

Fairwater Cons are still in control of Group B following their bye week and just need a single point in their final group game to guarantee a semi place, but the race to join them is very tight with three points separating the next three teams in the group. County Cons are in second place despite a 3-2 home defeat to Mackintosh Snooker, who are one point behind them in third place. Billy Connors and Eassa Din gave the Mack a 2-0 lead after wins over Dave Earls and Dave Standage respectively, but a 32 break from Ryan Bowgen saw him beat Mike Nessbert to pull one back. Carlos Schiazza gave his side the win after he defeated Mike Rathkey but Darren Gill’s win over Nathan Dunne kept County just ahead in the race for a semi-final spot.

Macky Misfits are only two points further back and still in the running though as they beat Roath Cons 3-2, with Satinder Singh winning the opener against Rob Reid. A 37 break from Jacob Boyle was enough to beat Alan Wright in the second frame to make it 2-0, but Phil Storer’s win over Steve Wellbeloved and Andrew Champion’s defeat of Deepak Singh took the match to a decider, with Bill Bainton securing the win after his victory over Lee Cornock.
