Caerphilly and Mackintosh Make the Final

The final of the Malcolm Keenor Trophy will be between Caerphilly A and Mackintosh Snooker after an exciting night of semi-final drama, with Canton Libs and Macky Misfits reaching the final of the CDSA Plate.

Caerphilly held a 4-1 advantage over Fairwater Cons from the first leg, but a comeback from Steve Flanagan’s side saw them take the match the distance and they got off to a good start with Shaun O’Connell beating Steffan Davies in the opening frame. Ian Denton defeated Dan Bridle to move Caerphilly one frame from victory, before Jason Hewett’s defeat of Allan Jones and Luke Pitman’s win on the black against Nural Khan saw Fairwater go ahead 3-1 on the night and pull it back to 5-4 on aggregate, but Rob McKenna beat Twm Sion Jones to send Caerphilly into the final.

Mackintosh Snooker had a much more straightforward path to meet Caerphilly in the final as they beat Taff’s Well 2-0 to win the match 6-1 on aggregate after they had won the first leg 4-1. The captains were drawn out first as Kevin Brown faced Mike Nessbert and a long, tense frame was eventually won by Nessbert on the colours. Jimmy Llewellyn was on next for Taff’s Well against Eassa Din hoping to keep his side in the match, and he had the opportunity to clear the table but a missed green was crucial and Din sealed it on the blue.

The CDSA Plate final will be between Macky Misfits and Canton Libs after two tremendous semi-final wins against Rumney British Legion and County Cons respectively.

The Misfits were looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg but breaks of 34 and 32 from Ethan Chichester saw him defeat Bill Bainton in the opening frame to extend Rumney’s lead. However, Satinder won the next after beating Andy McGill, before Ben Harding’s win over Renato Ridolini put Rumney on the verge of victory with a 5-3 lead. Jacob Boyle’s win against Tony Parkin kept the Misfits in the match, before an excellent green to black clearance by Martin Paterson saw him defeat Paul Chichester and take the match to a playoff frame. Both captains were able to choose their players for this crucial frame with Jacob Boyle facing Ethan Chichester to decide a place in the final, and after some tense exchanges and a very late night, Boyle won the frame on the brown to complete an extraordinary match.

They will face Canton Libs after a tremendous match against County Cons saw them win 3-2 to seal the match 6-4 on aggregate, but they had to mount a comeback as County started the match very strongly. Dave Standage got them off to the perfect start as he comfortably beat Luke Haines, before Dave Earls won a nail-biting frame on the black versus Rory Wigmore to give them a 2-0 lead. James Wigmore levelled the match at 4-4 after his win over Mike Rathkey, before Tony Chick’s nerveless blue to black clearance saw him defeat Darren Gill and give his side the lead, before Dave Whitcombe sealed the victory after beating Ryan Bowgen on the pink, as the match looked like it too was heading for a playoff frame.

The Medal Match between Taff’s Well Warriors and Roath Cons saw the Warriors win 7-3 on aggregate after they won 3-2 at Roath in the second leg. Lee Cornock beat Luke Sheppard in the first frame, before Geoff Sheppard levelled the match in the next. Simon Takata’s defeat of Andrew Champion and Andy Holman’s win over Rob Reid gave them a 3-1 lead, before Alan Wright pulled one back for Roath against Dave Richards.
