Caerphilly A and Fairwater Cons continue to battle it out for this year’s Premier League title as they both registered impressive 5-0 wins this week, to keep up the pressure on each other ahead of their potential final week showdown.
Fairwater won a closely-fought match at Taff’s Well with Twm Sion Jones winning the opening frame on the pink against Jimmy Llewellyn, before Steve Flanagan doubled their lead with victory over Glyn Jones on the colours. Terry Garland’s pursuit of the individual rankings title took a step closer as he won a close frame versus Justin Jones to make it 3-0, before the frame of the night saw Jason Hewett break down on 56 as a century looked likely and Scott Miners finish with an exhibition 35 consolation clearance. With every point being crucial for Fairwater, another frame went to the colours as Luke Pitman capped off a great night for the champions with a win against Kevin Brown.
However, as they were finishing their match, news was coming in that Caerphilly A had matched that result at home to Canton Warriors to maintain a two-point lead at the top. Captain Ben Griffiths opened up with a 48 break to beat Dave Richards, before Steffan Davies won a close frame against Chris Johnson to make it 2-0. Dave Hartnell won a tight frame on the colours versus Simon Takata, before Khurram Khan overcame an early deficit to defeat Andy Holman and Nural Khan completed the whitewash in another close frame as he beat Mike Watts.
County Cons are favourites for the Division One title as a 4-1 win at home to Canton Libs moved them three points clear of title rivals Macky Misfits who lost 3-2 at Roath Cons. Ryan Bowgen won the opening frame on the pink against James Wigmore, before a composed 32 break from Martyn Evans saw him defeat Rory Wigmore to double their lead. Ronnie Allen pulled one back for Canton as he beat Dave Standage, before Darren Gill’s win on the pink against Tony Chick sealed the win and a walkover for Suhayb Din completed a good night’s work for the Cons.
The Misfits lost ground on County despite Jacob Boyle giving them the lead after he defeated Chris Harding in the first frame, before debutant Joe Browse comfortably won the next against Steve Wellbeloved to level the match. Rob Reid won a close frame against Bill Bainton to give Roath the lead, before Renato Ridolini’s win over Andrew Champion restored parity but a 33 break from Lee Cornock saw him comfortably beat William Eades to give Roath the victory.
Mackintosh Sports have had a very good season and they all but confirmed third place in the Premier League after a 5-0 win over Rumney British Legion, with Eassa Din’s defeat of Paul Chichester and Carlo Schiazza’s win against Ben Harding giving them a 2-0 lead. Billy Connors’ win over Ethan Chichester and Mike Nessbert’s victory against Andy McGill made it 4-0 and Nathan Dunne completed the whitewash after beating Frank Deriu.
